O,K, here I go...
I'm really glad this came up. I didn't see the show, but Northrup's Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom is one of the first books I got as my problems worsened (in fact my Mom gave it to me.) I do think that there is some good stuff in there, but it's a shame it's burried under all that B.S. I kept going back to her book, feeling like if I decided to have a hysterectomy I would be copping out or not trying hard enough. I think that it is terrible to do this to women who are already struggling with so much. This is definitely not someone interested in nurturing women.
What she's basically saying when she says the fibroids are caused by stiffled creativity or biterness is that the fibroids are OUR OWN FAULT! It's advice like this that keeps us from getting the treatment we need.
Incidentally I am an artist and have been drawing and creating all my life. Of course I have creativity issues, what artist doesn't!? I am also very into natural health and spirituality, in my own way. But I know I can get in touch with my creativity all I want and this enormous fibroid that is bleeding and hurting is not going to simply go away. I wish it were that easy because I'd be the first to do it. If it's so true I would sure like to see some documented evidence of this.
She is hurting more people than she helps by propogating this myth! Bitter? you bet I am!

Is this woman for real???
It sounds to me like she was just using menopause as an excuse to leave her husband. I don't have a husband so who can I blame for my problems? Someone caused my fibroids and adeno, right? And what about Oprah when she said her periods were celebrations Obviously she has no idea what it is like to have be in labor every month and bleed so bad that you can't leave the toilet, let alone the house. Sometimes I passed clots so big that it felt like giving birth. Tell me again how all of this is in my mind and caused by bad relationships. SHEESH !! I would love to see the show she has if she experiences what some of us had to go through. I'm sure her attitude will be different.

Is this woman for real???
This woman has been on before and all of us were very outraged at that time too. She says that menopausal women should "go on a retreat and meditate" GRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr Give me a BREAK.
Until you walk a mile in our shoes .......................... I can't even respond anymore, because what I have to say about this woman is not appropriate for these boards.

Oprah Show
Okay everyone 1,2,3...MEDITATE! Yeah right! I'm like you , GIVE ME A BREAK! When I knew this show was coming on, I thought this show may be helpful. I was busy rearranging the guest room at the front of the house for my recovery while I listened to all that Dr.'s "wonderful"(HA!)advice. I am a basically happy, optimistic princess with a good marriage and two great sons. Yes I have stress in my life, but who doesn't? Something really good for stress is chocolate(in moderation of course) and who doesn't like chocolate? Oh, according to that Dr., refined sugar is always a NO-NO too! I plan on packing a small box of some special chocolates for my trip to the castle. Take that Doc!

Is this woman for real???
UGH!!! I watched part of the show yesterday and it reminded me why I stopped watching Oprah years ago. It stops being funny and entertaining when someone who has been elevated to the level of "lifestyle guru" (my title for hers.. not a direct quote) so carelessly endorses the thoughts and beliefs that were stated on yesterday's show! It makes me fearful for those that rely on Oprah for honest and factual information.. because I know there are many out there that do. I hope everyone that was watching could see through the fog that was being blown from that stage!!
Nobody in here is a failure, nor are we FARMERS of any of our diseases.. cultivating fibroids and whatever else.. BAH!!!
Jeers to Oprah for being so irresponsible!!
The only benefit that came out of yesterday's show was that it completely convinced me that I will subscribe to Hyster Sisters to make sure that those that want accurate information and sincere helpful support will continue to get it through this site!!

Is this woman for real???
June 6 - TAH/BSO for fibroids, adeno, and huge boggy uterus. which caused flooding and huge clots! I saw part of the show yesterday. After 15 minutes I told my DH to change the channel. This woman was making me feel so guilty. For 3 years I tried all the natural stuff to stop my problems. I exercise 5 days a week, take copious amounts of vitamins, meditate(Have for 20 years), have a positive life attitude, and great marriage. So Dr. Northrup, why did this happen to me? Even the experts don't know with all of us. This lady is a downer!

The Oprah Show ---
I total agree with everyone here. I didn't see this show the first time it was on but I did read about it on this board and couldn't believe what was I was reading! I did listen (I don't have a tv at work but I do have one of those radios that picks up tv stations) to it yesterday and frankly, I did what a few other posters did - I turned it off about mid-way through the program.
I'm not a regular viewer of the Oprah Show but I always considered her to be a fairly intelligent woman. However, if she can actually air this kind of garbage TWICE, I just may have to rethink that position. Oh, please, with all the resources this woman must have at her disposal, how can she actually put this stuff on her show. And not only once, but twice! What a disservice! We all have the right to believe what we choose to and if Oprah wanted to do a show on menopause, bravo! But at least present all sides.

Is this woman for real???
As a part of what my doc went into when she heard I had been reading Dr. Northrup, she said to me, "Some people are genetically predisposed to getting moles. Fibroids are like moles and some people are predisposed to getting them." There isn't a lot of knowledge about the genetic connection and why they grow, but I liked the comparison.
How many of us wouldn't try to unblock the creativity in our second chakras, diet and meditate to avoid surgery? It didn't work for her, why would it work for all the rest of us?
I wonder if Oprah has a hyper-link to Hystersisters.com for info on hysts. I searched her site for info early on and I found no references for hysts. I wonder if she might change her mind about Dr. N. if she had real people up there that could be supportive of real women instead of a Dr. that has some speculative ideas that don't seem based in reality.

Oprah show
Yes I agree with all of you. It is amazing how so many illnesses related to women are in our heads, whereas this would never be an issue with men. The minute Dr. N discussed the mind body connection to fibroids, she lost all credibility with me and anything she said after that I questioned. Imagine, we created these issues and only the medical profession can help. Irony? Have to go, my back is killing me( darn fibroid) I better go meditate to rid of the negative energy. Ha Ha
