Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
Help....
I'm starting to get scared that I really messed up.. :confuse:
I have suffered with endo for over 15 yrs, I'm 39 now. Have had a lap to get rid of the adhesions, continuous bcp's, etc.. things finally just got out of hand the last couple of years, excruciating pain, bleeding every 13 days, 2 periods every month, along with 2 pms's... Oh yeah... *punch* So finally my doc told me that the hyst would be my next option... I decided I really wanted some quality of life and had my TAH on 6-25-02. I told my Doc and he agreed that if my ovaries looked okay, that I wanted to keep them... well, came out of surgery and he said they looked pretty good and that he didn't need to remove them. At 2 1/2 weeks post op I started having lots of mood swings, bad crying spells, and hot flashes and night sweats... it's been so uncomfortable.. I talked to my doctor and he had my FSH levels checked and called me back and said I was definitely menopausal.. my ovaries are He said he wanted me to start on estrace 1mg a day to help until my ovaries kick back in. I started about a week ago and it's just starting to help a little bit, but I am getting scared that I'm feeding any endo that might be left behind.. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.. I sure would love to hear from some of you wise ladies out there.. I'm sorry this is so long, just needed to vent I guess.. Thanks for the ears...
Hugs to you all

Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
((Tracey)),
I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with so much It seems to be common post-hyst for the Ovaries to go into shock and stop working. For most, they will start doing their thing again shortly
I have not been DX w/ Endo but there our several Ladies here who have been, hopefully they will come along shortly....
Here is a thread that has tons of excellent links about Endo:

Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
Basslady,
Hang in there. I'm sure the real endo experts here will be along soon! But don't be afraid to call your doctor and share your concerns about estrogen replacement and endo. Any time you have doubts about your treatment, it's good to discuss it. You may decide together that it's worth waiting it out and seeing if your ovaries "wake up", or you may at least get an idea of your doctor's view of the pros and cons of estrogen replacement at this point in your recovery.
This is a decision you and your doctor should make together. It's not too late to change your mind if you decide the risks outweigh the benefits right now.

Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
It's like deja vu all over again. I made exactly your same decision last year and just had a BSO for a complex ovarian mass (benign) which was majorly all stuck to my colon... probably due to endo inflammation per my gyn Oncologist. I'll get the final word on whether endo caused the problem next week when I go for my post-surgical followup. Either way, I kept two perfectly good ovaries for a year and 1/2, but unfortunately had to go through a cancer scare and another abdominal surgery for my decision. However, if I had to make the same decision over again, I still would have kept my ovaries because I don't believe in taking out healthy organs (particularly important ones like ovaries) unless there's a family history of cancer. I don't know what the official medical concensus is on whether ovaries need to come out in all cases of endo, but my gyn felt the same way your's did, which was it was ok to keep them if they were free of endo at the time of the hyst.
Don't overthink your decision, it was a good one. You will probably be just fine, I was just one of the unlucky ones. Just pay attention to your body in the future. If you start having pain or get symptomatic, get an ultrasound, etc to make sure you catch any flair-up early. I am currently doing a 3-6 month HRT "diet" to increase my chances of no endo recurrence. I'm taking Fosamax for preserving bone density due to being small boned and having a family history of osteo. I'm doing fine so far with minimal hot flashes though I will probably need to get an estrogen cream for vaginal dryness and can't say on libido yet, still too early in the abdominal surgery recovery to know for sure.
Good luck.

Thank you
Thank you all so much for your kind and reassuring words. FG, you made me feel better about my decision., it is a difficult one to make and I didn't do so lightly, but I am still relatively young and wanted to try and keep my ovaries as long as possible. I have to admit I do feel kinda wimpy by giving in to all those nasty symptoms and taking the estrace, but I am just miserable and am ing that it will be very short term and that it won't aggrevate the endo.. I guess all I can really do is to try and think positively and deal with what comes when or if it comes., one day at a time.. I do feel a lil better, thanks.. I'll post again on my progress, hopefully all good news to come... what would we do without this great hystersister site. We are all truely princesses thanks to Kathy.
Hugs,
Tracy

Don't sweat it...
If you had endo, just ask him to balance your estrace with prometrium or provera. Provera had some wicked side affects for me, but for others...sometimes it works very well.
Prometrium is bio identical progesterone and will keep your endo from building up (at least that's the theory).
Going without hrt is misery! Let me know what the doc says.

Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
Hi Basslady,
Browsed through your letter and said wow, sounds a bit like mine! I am 40, had a tubil in June 00. They found an endo mess along with an endo mass the size of an orange. 8 months after that my iron went way down, had cramps really bad, GYN did ultrasound and found 2 masses growing on left ovary. Had surgery in June 01...removed uterus and left ovary. My right ovary seems to be doing fine. Sometimes I do feel crampy sensations on the right side and think, oh wow, its coming back but it is never the severe pain I had before the last surgery. My surgeon/GYN saw me 2 weeks ago and says everything looks good. I have had major migraine trouble though over the last 5 months. She says that Hysts do not cause Migraines. So I'm working with my primary doctor to work through these with medication at the time of attacks. Have you ever experienced migraines? I found it strange that they came on all of a sudden out of the blue. I would always get a cycle headache when I used to have periods.
But anyway, I always freak when I feel some cramping because I am terrified of getting endo back.
Love to hear more from you
I am brand new to this site and it looks pretty good.

Endo & Kept Ovaries... Scared I Messed Up..
Basslady,
I too have Endo, that was the reason for my VH. I too kept my ovaries, but I'm only 11 days post-op now. I have noticed mood swings and things like that, but for me, I think it's because I had multiple surgeries due to abscesses. Hang in there girl, I'm sure everything will be fine. If you need to talk I'm here for you.

((((((Hugs To All))))))
This site and all of the wonderful ladies that are here with encouragement and support anytime you need it, it's what's kept me from going completlely nuts... :confuse: Carla, I have suffered with migraines in the past, but thank god I haven't had one in years. I learned Biofeedback and that helped me tremendously with that as the pain killers just didn't work for me on my migraines. I wish you all the best in tackling yours, but you can do it. Calinda, you are still very very early in your recovery, so please make sure your taking it easy, cos ya know, the pillow are everywhere watching ya.. hehehe... Adrite, I agree with you on the no HRT deal, at least for me, I'm just too wimpy to withstand the night sweats and the Hot Flashes, and I am praying that my ovaries will wake up soon. I am now starting to get new symptoms that I'm not happy at all with. My ankles and legs are swollen pretty bad. The skin on my calfs feels so tight it almost hurts. And I got on the scales the other day, and I have gained about 15 pounds in like 6 days.. NO WAY!!! I just recently started taking Vioxx for back pain and talked to my pcp and he said to stop taking it. It causes water retention and swelling.. I stopped it yesterday but it hasn't helped yet, so I'm kinda scared it might be my estrace too?? Isn't swelling and weight gain a symptom of too much estrogen? I don't have the night sweats anymore, but still do have an occasional hot flash, occasional crying episodes at stupid things.. lol.. but my libido is fine.. So, I guess I will give the vioxx a couple of days to completly get out of my system, if the swelling isn't better, then maybe I'll cut my estrace dose in half and see what happens... So I might need some prayers and positive vibes from my fellow sisters out there.. If any of you ever need to talk I'm here, you can send me a message or email.
Hugs,
Tracy
