Back to work?

I am having an abdominal hysterectomy on 17 Oct for multiple fibroids (two are the size of ping pong balls). I am a personal fitness trainer and aerobics instructor part-time. My full-time job has me sitting behind a computer or in meetings for 8-9 hours a day. I was wondering if I will truly be out of work for 6 weeks as my surgeon suggested. What has been your experience?

Back to work?

I think it depends on the rate of healing. I would count on a minimum of 6. for the first few weeks after surgery, even sitting is uncomfortable and training would be difficult. I had a very physically demanding job and at 6 weeks, it was not doable, took another 2 and it still wasnt doable. to much lifting involved.
6weeks may seem like eternity, but in the grand scheme of things, its not really that long. You do not want to return to normal activities to soon and risk having a set-back. In my oppinion, your recovery is much to important.

Back to work?

The norm for time off after a hyst is usually from 6 - 8 weeks. It does vary some from person to person. I've seem some go back to work and normal activities sooner and some take a bit longer. My advice is to listen to your dr and do what he/she feels is best for you. Your own body will tell you if you've overdone - if that happens, back off and slow down a bit. You have only one chance to heal properly

Best wishes.

Back to work?

Absolutely, between you and your doctor, you will know what works for you. I went back to work at 2 weeks post op but started out at 4 hours a day first week, then 5 hours second week etc. I did not take anything for pain once I left hospital other than occassinal motrin so I think that not being croggy from that helped also. I take a kick boxing class and my dr. said I could return at 6 weeks doing baby kicks, but no real ab work til 8 weeks. Of course, everyone heals at a different rate, age/procedure/pain tolerance etc. You will know when your body is ready, and your body will tell you if you are not. Good Luck

Back to work?

Fit Trainer....are you worried about being laid up for that long without excercise? I regularly workout and I'm afraid about not doing anything in the form of excercise for that long. I want to be as fit for this as I can, hoping to have a better time of it. Although my hyst is a tvh. I also sit for 8 to 9 hours a day, another reason why I work out alot.
