2 weeks post hysterectomy: Swelly Belly Time Frame
I am exactly two weeks post-op today and dealing with a very swollen belly. I have read older posts on here about swelly belly and am so discouraged. I read that it can take a year or more before your belly is back to normal.
From what I have read, I am a text book case. My belly is not too swollen in the morning. The more I do, the more it swells. The evening is the worst.
I can get my regular pants buttoned but they are definitely a lot tighter. I avoid putting them on for fear of making things worse. I go back to work in 4 weeks and am hoping it goes down by then but from what I have read, I don't have much hope. I am so uncomfortable that I don't know how I will make this work, I teach Kindergarten and spend so much of my day moving around.
This swelly belly has me so depressed. I am a petite person with a small frame so this belly sticks out so much and is very noticeable. I look like I did when I was about 5 months pregnant yet I have lost 4 lbs since the surgery. I feel like I will have to buy a whole new wardrobe before returning to work.
MY BIG QUESTION IS: What is the timeline for other people dealing with swelly belly and what if anything helped move things along? As of right now, I am scared to do anything but sit and lay around for fear of making things worse.

Re: Swelly Belly Time Frame
Oh my, I could've written your post at 8 days post-op! I wasn't discouraged, but exasperated - swelly belly wasn't one of the things which was mentioned in the hysterectomy prep class given at the hospital. Researching that is what brought me to this site... and I haven't left yet (though the swelly belly has, mercifully).
If you think of any injury (broken arm, sprained ankle, burn), fluids gather around the inflammation as a part of the healing process. Lucky us, our inflammation is in our tummies . Sometimes it's nothing more than daily living which makes it worse, and as we heal we seem to notice it more in the evenings. I didn't even attempt fixed waistbands until 5-6 weeks post op, and I'd still find myself unbuttoning by mid-afternoon. My doctor said by week 8 I should notice it less and I did, but I'd still get it when I resumed an activity for the first time, or did something which really engaged my abs. I went to the mat with it at 8-1/2 weeks after washing the front porch, 12 weeks after heaving a 24-pack of soda on a high shelf over my head, and at 5 months after doing a short (< 5 mins) but intense abs workout. Each time, swelly belly lasted the rest of the day and perhaps in the morning, but went away.
You've probably already seen the article, but here's a link to Tummy Care - Swelly Belly. I do recommend a shopping spree - woo-hoo ! It doesn't entail a whole new wardrobe though, just a few skirts, skorts and pants. Wide soft waistbands worked very well for me. Go for separates which you can mix & match with tops, and no one will notice that you're wearing the same 5 or 6 pieces every week. And if you go for cute and trendy, you'll be able to wear them more often when you want comfort.
You're not alone, and yes, it will get better!
