Citron, you are right in that it's a personal decision about HRT, but there are Dr.'s who are better informed than others. I think the new media only pick bits and pieces and don't tell the whole story. Do your homework and do what's right for you. My surgery is now scheduled for March 24th. 2 weeks isn't long to wait. In fact it gives me LOTS of praying time.

I WANT my ovaries out!! Anyone else?

My TAH is next Tuesday - possible removal of ovaries. My consultant is going to see if there is any endo visible - if not he will leave them. As I'm only 34 I felt quite desperate to keep my ovaries - if I was 40 he said he would take them. I realise that I am running the risk of having further surgery along the line.

I just don't want to be on HRT for the next 20 years .... I've been using hrt patches while on Zoladex (Lupron) for the past 14 months and felt awful - hot flushes, depression, just a terrible flatness to my emotions - I'm not me anymore. What if I felt like that for the next 20 years? Saying this, I have a gut feeling that I am going to lose my ovaries anyway ...

We shall see!

Me too! I'm taking it all out by the advice of my doc and believe I'm doing the right thing. She feels strongly that I should use HRT also.

I'm not blindly following her advice, I have researched and we decided together.

You are not the only one

If you do lose your ovaries and aren't happy with the hrt you are using, tell your Dr. and keep trying something else until you find one you like. You aren't stuck with just one choice. Remember that!!! Use your outside voice if you have to and keep trying until they get it right! It's the ONLY way to go. Life is too short to be miserable. Good luck!!

JustinTime,
I kept my ovaries and am glad I did. All the literature I have read says it is best to let your body go through menopause on its own if you can. Unless you have CA or some underlying problem with your ovaries, think twice and get as many oppinions as you can. Once you become a Princess you will feel much better and be much happier.
Oh and just thought you would like to hear this, my 4th child, Justin was nicknamed JustinTime because he came just in time for his auntie to come from Michigan to welcome him into the world. Called her in the morning to let her know I was in labor and she was here the next day with lots of hugs and kisses and she even brought me my Goddaughter. Justin was born on April 2nd, but I was having contractions on the 1st, guess he fooled both the doctor and my DH and I. Hope this made you laugh a bit.

I WANT my ovaries out!! Anyone else?

Hiya

I believe that if you dont have cancer then its a personal choice that you need to make based on being educated.

I noticed you said to have faith in your doctor, but that is not always a good thing. If I had listened to my first doctor I would probably have bled to death. Telling me nothing is wrong with me and I should get councilling, that I probably had post natal depression when my youngest was 3 and that anti-d's will help me. If I hadnt done my own research I would never have known that my doctor was an idiot LOL.

My gynie is leaving my ovaries in, even tho I have endo. I was very surprised when he said that, as we all know, estrogen feeds it. I am now deciding whether to push for them to be taken, as I dont want to go through another surgery or hormone treatments in the future. I had provera for a while and its caused me endless hormonal agony. Something I am not interested in going through again anytime soon.

I am glad that your doctor listens to you and has agreed with you, but do you ever wonder if you might be exchanging one set of problems for another? I am at a cross roads as to whether it is the best thing to do or not.

Hope your surgery goes well and you have a fast and uneventfull recovery.

Hugs Merrydee

I WANT my ovaries out!! Anyone else?

I wouldn't say my doctor listened to ME. I would say we both had a very indepth discussion and he told me his reasons for recommending my ovaries be removed and I told him my arguments for keeping them AND for removing them and removing them seems to be MY best decision. I'm not following blindly here. He's my 4th OB/GYN since my dearly loved GYN retired 5 years ago. I haven't been happy with any of the others who have given me wrong information and not been diligent in their examinations and treatment of my problems. I've also always gone to women GYN's and was totally amazed I felt better and felt I was being better taken care of where I'm at now. He also found two other problems that weren't GYN related and the specialist in those areas that I went to were amazed he even knew there was a problem so I feel this Dr. is treating ME.......not my symptoms. I feel good about my decision and it's not been made blindly or lightly.....BELIEVE ME!!

The best hormones for you are the ones produced by your own ovaries. Have you read any of the posts in the Hormone Jungle? Many ladies post there who can't seem to find the right balance of HRT.

Take a peek in the No Hormone Desert Oasis too. Most of the ladies who post there can't take HRT. I'm one of those ladies. My doctor wanted to take the ovaries while here was "in there" already, and I said okay. I wish I knew then what I know now. It turns out that I have a blood clotting disorder that I knew nothing about, and for that reason I can't take hormones. I have hot flashes, which are helped by my taking an antidepressant, and I have to worry more now about osteoporosis.

Another thing to consider is that if your ovaries should stop functoning after surgery (whether it's after several years or immediately) it doesn't mean that you will need another surgery to have them removed. Also, some insurance companies won't cover all types of HRT, so it may be that you will end up paying for this out of your own pocket. The hormones created by your own ovaries are free.

I've provided a few links which may help you in your decision.

Before you make your final decision ask yourself this question. If you weren't having a hysterectomy, would you ask your doctor to remove your healthy ovaries? If necessary, the ovaries can be removed at a later date, but once they're gone, there's no going back.

Hi am 40 years old and had TAH/BSO on 1-22-04 Having my oravies removed was decided by me and told to the doctor right before surgery began. I'm glad I did. dr has prescribed hrt however I have chosen not to take them at this time. My family and I are adjusting to all the changes.

I WANT my ovaries out!! Anyone else?

I had my TVH BSO & A&P repairs last year due to prolapse (I mean EVERYTHING was sliding south!) I decided to have my DR take the ovaries as I have always had cysts, and I knew that if I kept them, I would be having them removed at some point - He actually asked me several time if I was sure that this is what I wanted - I was 44 at the time of my hysterectomy, and I guess he thought I might want them...I knew I didn't, so he took 'em out - only to find that there were good sized cysts on both!
