Short of breath, 3 days post op?

Anyone else having shortness of breath? Had TVH on Monday and I remember when I came out of surgery they kept having to yell at me to breathe and have had a little cough since....owwwy. I figured it was from the breathing tube. I'm still having a hard time talking and catching my breath. Is this normal?

Re: Short of breath, 3 days post op?

Not sure if it normal or not, but I do know that my throat was a tad sore for the first 3 days. (I'ld never had a breathing tube before.)Werther's hard candies were my friend. As for the breathing, try deep breathing exercises on a regular basis. These are only suggestions, you may want to call your Drs office and just check in about it. If nothing else for some piece of mind. They may say it's normal or they may be able to give you some suggestions as well. Take care!

Re: Short of breath, 3 days post op?

I noticed after surgery that my normally rather low voice sounded thready. I tried humming backwards scales and discovered that I'd lost my lower register. Also, as I picked up speed in walking, I began getting stitches in my side.

A friend who sings suggested that my diaphragm wasn't getting as much support from my belly muscles as usual. I started doing deep breathing exercises, inhaling deeply, then focussing on using my belly muscles to push the air out of my lungs. I did these for a couple of weeks and they really helped.

Bonus points: if you do them while sitting on the toilet, they make BMs pass more easily.

Re: Short of breath, 3 days post op?

Yes, if you had any air pumped into your belly, it accumulates under your diaphragm, causing shortness of breath. Even if you didn't have any air, swelling in your abdomen can press up against your diaphragm causing the same problem. I am 2 weeks out today and I am still struggling with shortness of breath and gas in my belly!
