Prophylactic surgery
Next Tuesday i will have surgery to remove my ovaries, tubes, uterus and cervix. I feel fine and everything is in good condition. I am choosing to do this to prevent ovarian cancer. I have the brca2 mutation which carries a potential 60% risk of getting the cancer.
Has anyone else from hystersisters undergone preventative surgery? I need reassurance that putting myself through major surgery when i am not sick is ok. I am 60 yrs old and diabetic so this was not an easy decision. Any other 60-ish sisters out there who can give advice?

Re: Prophylactic surgery
I did not have it for your reason, however I had TAH/BSO at age 58. I had worked myself up into a nervous wreck, but when I got to the hospital everyone was super kind, understanding and professional. I felt much relaxed. I can't remember anything between being wheeled into the or and being asked if I minded being on the maternity floor right before being wheeled off to my room. I was more lucid by the time I got situated in my room, in no pain and feeling pretty good. All I could think was "if I had known this, I would have done it a long time ago" I felt good my entire recovery despite my age and being overweight. I walked a ton right from the get go, and was able to take care of myself with no problem. You can do this! Trust me if I made it through, anyone can!

Prophylactic surgery
Thank you for your comments, especially about age. That is a big concern for me and i have been told by some i am crazy to go through this. I am hoping recovery will go alright. My grandmother died of ovarian cancer in her 60s and i will do whatever it takes to avoid that.

Re: Prophylactic surgery
I am younger and can not speak to your age but I wanted to re-assure you that if you want to have the surgery to prevent cancer nobody should judge you for it in a negative way!
And 60 is not that old nowadays....
I can see why you do not want to wait until cancer knocks on your door.
In any way - you can talk to a diabetes instructor about how to keep your blood sugar at it's best after surgery to ensure that wound healing and well being is optimal.

Hi brca2+des -
Yes, there are women on this site who have had this surgery for the reasons you state. Here is an article on BRCA+ and Prophylactic Salpingectomy.
Here also is an article on Diabetes and Hysterectomy.
I know this is a difficult decision to make, but you are not alone in this. We are here for you.
