Cough & cold. Feel so ill. Tips for coughs please

I caught a cough and it is progressively getting worse. It's only a virus, but having open surgery makes a cough a big deal right? Regular cough medicines do not help me and never have, they are usually a waste of money. Should I just take plenty of C vit and try not to strain my tummy too much. Easier said than done :-(

I've read that hot chocolate is just as effective as OTC meds. My dd likes this option better than meds, too! Another option the allergist recommends is Delsum from the drug store.

I've heard that Delsum is good but I am in the UK. If its not better by morning then I might resort to trying an otc medicine. I will try the hot chocolate though! Yum

Use lots of saline spray in your nose, and consider a cool must humidifier in your bedroom. Drink lots of fluids and even chicken soup. The goal is to thin the mucus so less coughing. If you do cough with stitches place a pillow over your stomach and press on it try to limit stress on your stitches. Call a nursenat your surgeons office for more ideas. Hang in there...

Honey mixed with lemon juice helps and taking zinc tablets or lozenges, along with 1 - 2 grams vitamin c twice daily.

you are a month out fom surgery, so I wouldn't be to concerned with damageing anything from your surgery, I would call your doctor and see if he can call something in to the druggest for you to help your cough. Ask about an inhailer of albuterol.

Any type of tea with Citrus is what I was told in the past. The only time I drink Lemon tea is when I am sick. Even my 22 year old son as soon as he gets sicks starts drinking lemon tea. Especially if your throat is sore or scratchy because it is soothing. I hope you feel better soon. Hugs.
ps I have chronic post nasal so have times in the day I cough a lot after the tube in my throat for surgery it was worse. It just strained things a little more for the first couple of days.

Yes!! And to the citrus tea, add a slosh of whisky or brandy and some honey.

Basically, this is a "hot toddy" if you call it that in the US. It will make you feel a LOT better!

Coughing and (worse) sneezing are no fun after abdominal surgery!!

Try a netty pot
