Re: Living will

Living wills aren't recognized in the province where I live. However, I did draw up a healthcare power-of-attorney before I headed out for the castle.

Check with your own province or state to find out what laws apply. You may be able to find the forms on-line for free - I couldn't, but my family had to help our mother in Ohio with similar docs and we were able to find Ohio forms on-line.

Re: Living will

I have a Medical directive which is like a living will. I just downloaded one from the Internet, but the hospital had one I could have used. It gave me peace of mind.
Best wishes!

Re: Living will

I have one sitting on my table....seems weird to think about filling it out. But...I know I should have one. I'm single, so my sister will be my person. I'm having the same feeling about my other "will". I don't have an official one of those either, just a document that I have on my computer. I suppose I should print it and at least get it notorized if nothing else before my surgery on July 3rd.

Re: Living will

I didn't have one but strongly considered it. I did, however, have a discussion with my mom about how to help my husband make necessary decisions. I wanted him to make them but he isn't good with a lot of snap decisions if something was necessary.

I'm single too, and asked my middle sister to be my person. She's the only one in my family I'm really close to, I trust her to follow my wishes *and* she happens to be a nurse practitioner, which means she's good with healthcare lingo.

The only thing is, Sis lives across the border and on the other side of the continent. So before I headed out for the castle, I put her in touch with a friend of mine who lives in the same city where I was having my surgery (with said friend's permission) so that she'd have some local support.

I was going to do a "regular" will before I headed out as well, but ran out of time. When I first got my cancer diagnosis, doing a regular will seemed really important! But then I discovered this site. The more time I spent here talking with women who'd had hysterectomies for cancer, the less urgent doing a will began to seem. My priorities refocussed on surviving the surgery and the cancer.

Still gotta do that will someday, though. LOL

Re: Living will

Glad I'm not the only one. Just makes everything feel that much more real I guess. But..SurprisedNB is right, it's a necessary evil to do the "paperwork", but, concentrating on how much better things will be after the surgery would be a great use of idle waiting time.

Re: Living will

I had the whole, "You know, if I die, I want you to donate my organs and have them use anything they can use," conversation. DH squirmed and thankfully we were on a walk so we could both express our anxiety with physical movement.

I've been wondering about the living will. I filled one out when pregnant and getting ready to go into labor, but have wanted to avoid it this go around. Tomorrow, I'll go in for pre-op testing and will ask them about it. Thanks for the nudge!
