Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
Okay... I have read all of the responses to "I want to keep my cervix...I think" I am wondering, If I am able to keep my cervix (debatable @ the moment) will that preclude me from having the procedure performed vaginally?

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
Generally, the cervix cannot be retained if the hysterectomy is done vaginally. There are a very few doctors who can leave the cervix when a hysterectomy is done vaginally but it is rare! Anatomy wise, the cervix is below the uterus. Thus, when a hysterectomy is done vaginally, the cervical portion of the uterus is removed first to reach the rest of the uterus!
I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your response...could you tell me if the shortening of the vaginal canal is significant enough to cause pain during sex?

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
The vaginal canal is usually not shortened significantly enough to notice. We actually have an article on the topic that might explain it a bit better for you: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_2543.htm.
I can tell you that I did not notice a shortening at all and having a hysterectomy did not cause sex to be painful for me!

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
Thank you again Weiser... I am so grateful to you for answering my questions.
So, It seems as though I will be having this surgery done abdominally, if I wish to keep my cervix (again debatable @ the moment). If you have time, would you mind reading my other post and giving me some more guidance?

With the LSH (laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy) the surgery is done via lap incisions and the cervix is kept. While not all doctors are able to do the LSH, there are many who can! So that might be an option for you to consider!
Here is a link to the information about various Hysterectomy types: Hysterectomy Options. You can also find the link in the blue bar at the top of the screen under the big HysterSisters logo.
I will do see if I can help you with your other posts!

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
You are a life saver! I think I might actually get some sleep tonight. The task of researching this information has been daunting. Sorting through the general information on the internet has been quite confusing, with so much conflicting information. Again, I can't tell you how grateful I an to have found this site, and to have someone be so willing to help out of the kindness of her heart...
I did read the info on the shortening of the vaginal canal ..Or possible minimal shortening...Thank you for that. I am feeling quite attached to my cervix at the moment, so I look forward to the additional reading about the other procedure you have passed on...

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
I had the LSH procedure done on 9/17 and I certainly recommend it if possible, especially if you are wanting to keep your cervix. The recovery time for the LSH is generally much shorter than for the other types of hysterectomies. However, there are a lot of factors involved in whether you are able to have this type of surgery: prior abdominal surgery, size of uterus, etc. If you are able to go this route I don't think you would have any regrets.

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
Thank you , Kiwi. I will be asking my Gyn. about this procedure. I do note have any uterine or cervical problems, so I think I will push for this procedure, even if that means finding a new Dr.
My problem is that I have had ovarian problems, with a cyst biopsy coming back as a borderline malignant.
I don't see any logical reason why I couldn't have this procedure, as my cervix is healthy, and the uterus is not enlarged...
Could you tell me a bit about your recovery?

Re: Vaginal hysterectomy and keep the cervix?
I haven't had any problems with recovery. My doctor released me at my two week post op visit with the advice to not overdo it and to listen to my body. I was 4 weeks post op yesterday and I'm feeling great, like I never even had surgery. I spent one night in the hospital after surgery and then went home and took it very easy. I started walking in my neighborhood about 3 days after my surgery ( only a block or two at first), and now I am back up to about a mile and a half. I was running about 3 miles a day prior to surgery, and at this point I'm probably ready to start running again. I think one thing that has really helped with my recovery is that I was in really good physical shape prior to having the LSH. Going back to work wasn't an issue for me because I retired from teaching last year, but if I was working I could have gone back to work after one week, however I personally would try to take at least 2 weeks off work after an LSH. Also, I didn't have any ovarian problems, but the doctor did go ahead and remove my ovaries and tubes.I was already in menopause and I have a strong family history of cancer. I don't know if having ovarian problems keeps you from having this kind of surgery or not. Good luck with your decision.
