HI from a new member!
Hi girls,
I had a myemectomy in 1995 (to remove a 15 cm, rare tumor). Through ultra sound, another 8 cm tumor was discovered on my other ovary, so 5 weeks ago I had a radical hysterectomy. (would like to hear from others who have had their surger(ies) via exploratory laporatomies.)
First 2 weeks was beyond difficult, but by week 3, I was ready to 'move forward' so I started doing more than I should have. Week 4 I was up and about and went for my 'post op' and, instead of the doc happy about my progress, he scolded me. Regretably, I already have a hernia from lifting, etc. So I went home and 'kicked it down a notch'. My posting is regarding the following. At the beginning of week 5, I came down with acky knees, fever chills and dry heaves for 2 days. I was scared and miserable but thought I could a flu bug. Day 3 everything went away and I called my GYN surgeon to report this. (concurred it seems like flu and referred me to my 'regular' doc.) I just stayed at home taking it REAL easy, but but 2 days ago I started some vaginal draining which REALLY has thrown me off. I would not call this discharge, but draining! No pain or blood, but it has some color and odor. Any of you girls experience this? Please advise and I'm happy to be part of this 'club'.

HI from a new member!
Welcome! I had a total hysterectomy by laprascopic. You should call the Dr. about the drainage especially since you say there is a odor. I still have a discharge since my surgery on June 1, 2005. My doctor told me I would bleed/discharge for 4-6 weeks. My discharge has changed from pink watery to a more salmon creamy like to red spotting....I am getting a mix of it, but doctor told me it was normal as long as it wasn't a period like bleeding/discharge. With the odor though that would concern me as it could be a sign of infection or vaginitis, etc.

Hi, Marali --
When you say "fever chills," do you mean you're actually running a temperature? How high? Anything over 100 degrees F. (37.8 degrees C.) warrants a call to the doc. Also, if the draining is constant, the doctor may want to rule out a fistula, especially if your hysterectomy also included removal of the cervix.

HI from a new member!
Marali:
Watch that discharge very carefully.
At five weeks post-op I suddenly started having a discharge. Over the course of about 3 days, it started yellow, and then turned to greenish-yellow. It was slightly malodorous and then turned VERY malodorous. It was light in consistency then turned heavy. I was later told that this discharge was PUS
Over the course of these 3 days, I was running a temp of about 100, but it never went above 100.
Suddenly, on day 4 I had HORRIFIC pelvic pain, and even worse HORRIFIC pain in my right thigh of all places. I thought I had a blood clot.
Went to the ER on day 4, and my temp had suddenly shot up to 102. They gave me about 6 doses of Dilaudid in my IV - it did NOTHING for the pain. I was crying and every once in a while would just lose it and scream. CT scan discovered a pelvic abcess. Was admitted-once up to my room, doc prescribed a VERY large Dilaudid dose in a pump, and IV antibiotics-relief AT LAST! . They placed a drain the next morning. Was there for 7 days.
Start taking your temp several times a day. I wish I would have gone to the ER sooner, but really, the pain came on like gangbusters! Symptoms of an infection are very subtle at first, but then WATCH OUT!

thanks for your quick responses girls!
Hi girls,
thanks to each of you who responded to my introduction and inquiry.
I think I'm going to get brave and call my dr again regarding this. I'm afraid I might have an infection. I'll keep you posted.
hugs hugs,
Marali
