Pre-Op.....this is for REAL!

I have been on this site for about a month now, reading posts, doing research, asking questions, but it wasn't until my pre-op today that it hit me.....I am having a hysterectomy!! I am 31 years old! Thankful I had my family young, so that wasn't a concern. But in 13 days I will be under the knife and I will have no control over the out come. Reading the anethesiologists release scared the crap out of me. My Dr. said that he could do this procedure in his sleep, but to me this is a big deal! I am having a full vaginal hysto with laparoscopy, taking ovaries and cervix. I am terrified that after all this, I will still have pain. What if things don't get better? I have intersticial Cystitis also, so I'm not expecting to be competely pain free (though I secretly hope I will be). I am going for one more "2nd opinion" tomorrow just to make sure I'm doing the right thing. I haven't been able to be with my husband in 4 months, and haven't been with him pain free in over 2 years. I haven't had a day without pain in about 6 months, just some mild days and some really bad days. I know I'm doing the right thing, I just need some extra reasurance. I had my 4 week post op appt this week. I told the gyn that I had been so scared before surgery and wasted all that time worrying because I am fine now. (well i haven't had sex yet so can't say I know completely if I am fine). He said, "Well sure, you don't know really what to expect, and no matter how much we tell you it will be ok, it is still scary." The first doc I went to said he would never have this or any surgery. I thought that was odd coming from someone that does it for a living!

It sounds like you are more than half way there with your planning and your decision. You will be glad you got another opinion, I think it is easier to recover if you are sure about your decision.

My doctor started talking to me four years ago about having a hysterectomy because of the size of my fibroids and the discomfort I was having. I just kept thinking I'd wait it out and see if menopause would come along and shrink them. Finally, I had a TVH 5 weeks ago. I had scared myself for way too long - it wasn't nearly as bad as my imagination had made it out to be. My doctor told me that she'd done many of these surgeries. At first I didn't like that her comment because it felt like she didn't realize what this meant to me and how scared I was. So, I said something to her about that and we talked - I finally ended up telling her that her experience was comforting to me. Good luck - don't let your imagination run too wild.

The pre op is scary, it does make everything so real!!
I am glad your going for a 2nd opinion! It may ease your mind!
I went for a 2nd opinion and he is doing my surgery. I feel comfortable with him even though I just started going to him.
You have to go with what makes you comfortable!!
