Hysterectomy with possible bowel resection

Hi, on July 5 th I have scheduled my hysterectomy with possible bowel resection, aside of my doctor there will also be a colorectal surgeon and a urologist, as I have massive endometriosis with adhesions to my bowel. Has anyone had this done? What was your experience? Thank you

Re: Hysterectomy with possible bowel resection

Ugh. Welcome, sorry, and yes..I've had both. I didn't have mine at the same time though because I was stubborn and scared

My gyn/onc/surgeon wanted to do a resection because it was very clear by CT that I had endo on my colon. However, my body messed with me and the months before surgery my colon symptoms improved dramatically. I'm in the healthcare field and for some reason in my mind had just built up a colon resection as just the worst thing ever so I begged him to leave it alone.

One year later I was doing GREAT not having monthly periods (it's the BOMB I tell ya, as my 13 year old would say!) but then my colon symptoms returned horribly...I would wake up on any given day (but usually cyclical and once a month since I still had one ovary) and be so nauseated, horrible abdominal cramping and pain and then vomiting.I lived and worked that way for one year until finally it interfered with some huge birthday plans I had for my husband.

Long story short I ended up with 8" of colon removed/resected. There is no way the endo could have just been cut off of my colon since on pathology report it had completely invaded thru the colon wall.

I was in the hospital for my hysterectomy just overnight. The colon resection was a 6 day hospita stay with an open incision.

This is big surgery. Hopefully your surgeon has not minimized it and acted like you will be back to normal in weeks. Your biggest problem from the hyst will be the lingering fatigue. Hard to describe until you go through it. I was fit and in shape and it still was hard to struggle through. The colon surgery was a bit easier with the fatigue but still about three weeks before I returned to work (I just work part-time anyway).

Let me know if you have specific questions. I feel SOOOOO good now I wouldn't trade it for anything but it is still very big surgery and very scary as you get closer to your surgery date. I'll be here for you

Re: Hysterectomy with possible bowel resection

It can be pretty scary to have to face this. Prior to my surgery, they were really worried about where the endo was. I got lucky in that the Lupron shrunk it enough to get it off the bowels so didn't require any more surgery. It sounds like your docs are very good. Sending hugs

Re: Hysterectomy with possible bowel resection

Thank you, I had Da Vinci surgery back in March for fibroid removal and there is when they discovered massive endo. They cleaned as much as they could even in the rectum area, my uterus is stuck to the bowel, that is why they are doing everything intone surgery, and I actually prefer it, they will try and rescue one ovary. I don't know why it took me forever to recover from the March surgery, this time it will be open surgery with abdominal incision, so I'm guessing the recovery will not be nice, I am 42 and have a 6 year old with special needs so I'm eager to be back on my feet ASAP especially during summer. I'm only scared of the possibility of a colostomy, it's low, but it lingers in my mind. Thanks for your responses
