And don't forget the popsicles...

After surgery my throat was dry and scratchy for the first 4 or 5 days from being intubated. I don't normally eat popsicles, but I had my husband go out the first day and buy me 2 boxes of fruit juice bars and they were very soothing. Also consider getting some hot tea, this helps too.
You may be put on oxygen while you are in the hospital, and it can dry out your nasal passages. I found the saline nasal spray very helpful for this.
Also, talk with your doctor before you go into the hospital about the pain medication that you will be on directly following your surgery. Ask if there is a back up plan in case you find yourself allergic to what they are giving you, you do not like the side effects, or you feel that it is not controlling your pain. I ended up stuck with the morphine pump even though it was making me itch and giving me headaches because there was not a back up plan, and the nurses did not want to call the Dr in the middle of the night for different orders.
If you have someone who can stay at the hospital with you over night, take them. The pain medication may make it difficult for you to think straight when the nurses or doctors are giving you instructions, and it is nice to have someone who can help you got things you need so that you can just rest and not have to wait for the staff to help you.
I know this has been said before by other sisters, but I can't stress enough..... don't be afraid to ask questions! Make a list before you go in to your pre op appointment with your doctor and make sure you feel like all of your questions have been answered to your satisfaction before you leave.
Good luck and God bless you!
