when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
I'm impatiently waiting for the call with my surgery date. I'll be having a TAH including the ovaries.
Can anyone tell me how soon after the surgery the effects of the surgical menopause starts?
I've been told that I won't be able to do HRT due to endo cancer, but is black cohash safe to take for hot flashes/night sweats?
Thanks Ladies!

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
I think that it varies greatly in terms of when the symptoms show up, if at all. Some women report having night sweats their first post-op night. I'm not sure why it varies. I can tell you that I've been taking HRT for almost 2 yrs now and it's a script for BCPs, so I have the one week of placebo pills, which I don't bother with. Most months, I have night sweats the 2nd day after ending the HRT pills. I'm having the same surgery as you are, so I'm preparing myself to feel some of the symptoms very quickly.
I've heard some controversy over the negative health affects of black cohash, so do take to your dr. and read up on it. If you google "surgical menopause" you'll find some interesting information. Don't be frightened by all that it can entail but it's best to be prepared.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
Hi ! I had my tah/bso May 20th and I didn't start with any symptoms until about 3 weeks out. The one that caused the most grief is insomnia.I do get a few hot flashes, but nothing like I thought I would. I get warm but I don't break out in a sweat or anything. I'm still waiting for the emotional part to kick in. I know my sister cried alot, so, I kept waiting for that to hit me..I'm still waiting.lol . I'm in your boat, HRT is not in the books for me either... right now I'm just taking my time, reacquainting myself with my new me, and, if down the line I feel I need some help (herbs) I will use them. The best thing to do is focus on healing and talk to your Dr. REMEMBER no question is silly and EVERYONE is different! Best of luck!

Technically you will go into surgical menopause when your ovaries are removed. However the symptoms hit people differently just like regular menopause symptoms. There can be a variety of reasons for it; possibly your ovaries were already declining a bit in their hormone production and fat produces estrogen so there may be some extra reserves. One hyster sister said describe it as being "fluffy" and said that helped her avoid symptoms. That always made me smile. Some people's symptoms hit in the recovery room, others later (mine hit 5 days after surgery like a mack truck) and some say no problems ever.
An FYI on the no HRT if you have had cancer. You can talk to your gyn onc about it but that appears to be changing slightly. I just had my 2nd surveillance visit with my gyn onc this past Tuesday and we were talking about vaginal estrogen to prevent atrophy. He said there are 5 studies out there (not the best conducted) that are showing no link between vaginal estrogen and recurrence of cancer. So he was okay with me using it in the lowest dose possible to reduce symptoms for quality of life issues. Something to think about and talk to your Dr about if it seems necessary.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
My symptoms started about 5 days after surgery, and I was on HRT. I had to up my dose in order for it to take effect. Everyone is different though. I take Estroven PM at night, which is an over the counter herb. Has Black Cohosh, Chamomille, and other things to help with the night sweats.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
Hi. Mine also started about five days afterwards. I already started menopause before surgery and for about the first five days all the symptoms had gone away. Then they started back. I wasn't on HRT at first but I had to go on about week three. My hot flashes are a bit better but I still have about 15 a day or so. Sleeping has got some better too. My mom never had a hot flash. I have a co worker that had a TAH/BSO and was not in meopause at all before and has not had one menopausal symptom and her surgery was over a year ago. Everyone is different.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
Hi! I was already having occasional mild hot flashes prior to surgery. Immediately post-op, nothing. About 3 weeks post-op, I began to have horrible hot flashes a few times a day, but no night sweats. The hot flashes lasted about 1 month. I haven't had one symptom since, and don't expect any.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
Hot flashes started on Thursday morning, I had my surgery on Tuesday. So 2 days!
Everyone is different. I hear that since I am so thin, I had less stored Estrogen in my fat cells so mine started sooner. Just be ready and dont let it scare you. Its normal and can be handled. I know that the Chillow was a lifesaver and so were popsicles!

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
I am not skinny but and at the right weight for my height. I had symptoms before my surgery and for five days afterwards had not menopausal smyptoms whatsoever. Then they started slowly and built up. I started on HRT (evamist) at three weeks and it just didn't do much for me. Today I started on Vivelle-dot and so far so good. I haven't had one hot flash so far. Dr. said I should notice a difference pretty quickly. I still eat popsicles and use my chillow at night. I make sure our room is cold so I can sleep better.

Re: when does menopause start after TAH/BSO?
My gyn said that all the research says black cohosh is fine.
My onco gyn said she thought I should avoid the black cohosh.
that was 6 years ago--check for the latest research on pubmed or medpub whichever it is.
I actually went into menopause a year before my hysterectomy and ovary surgery and just lately, 6 years out, I am noticing that my skin is starting to look a little thinner. water aerobics 3x a week has really helped with mood, hot flashes etc.. plus I try to be a healthy eater--I was just recommended a book today called UltraMind solution that my doc says gives a great program for overall health--maybe check it out--I ordered it on the authors website to get some extras, but have not read it yet.
I had adenocarcinoma in the uterus, and being estrogen dependent, my onc gyn said to avoid foods with estrogen in them, like soy products which are supposed to help with hot flashes etc. Funny for me, the hot flashes had pretty much stopped and then two weeks ago, i ate some diet ice cream with Splenda in them and wham--hot flashes came back--go figure--they are easing up again.
Good luck--really though, I think exercise is a great healer, take care, Love, Alana
