2 weeks post hysterectomy: Hormonal cycling?
Hi Everyone!
I have been reading posts for a while, but new to posting on here.
Two weeks ago I had a total hysterectomy, kept the ovaries.
I had this done for many reasons: fibroids, periods starting every 7-10 days that were super heavy and lasting at least 6 days (hubby gets a lot of credit for being patient!!). Then came the crippling back pain that my gyno could only attest to being an "angry uterus". I tried several other methods to help: Novasure, DNC, meds... Nothing else worked.
Although skeptical that the back pain was associated to my uterus, (had scans and X-rays that showed nothing else going on), we decided last ditch effort, Total Hysterectomy.
After surgery, instant relief in my back!!! Miracle! A pain that limited almost all movement was simply gone! I did not even feel the slightest bit of pain, for the first 13 days.
Three days ago, I woke up with back pain, worse than before. I was in tears: from pain, and frustration! Then a few hours later I felt super bloated, then felt like I had abdominal cramps, then the migraine.
My question to you all is, is my body going through the motions of having a period? This would be the time a "normal" cycle would occur. The symptoms have mostly subsided, which makes me think my hunch is correct.
I had my two week follow up with my gyno tomorrow, but she had to reschedule for next week due to a personal emergency. I can't have my questions go unanswered for another week! I can't take knowing the back pain is back, but if for only a few days a month I can deal... Since before it was never ending.
One more question, if these are regular and normal symptoms, will this happen every 7-10 days like my cycles used to be? Or will they get to be more normal?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!!!

If you retain at least one ovary, yes you will still have your monthly cycle with usual PMS symptoms each month. You just won't have menstrual bleeding. I am 4 years post op and still have my regular PMS each month. It's my reminder that my ovaries are working well and this is very reassuring to me.
Here is an article on this:
PMS Post Hysterectomy
Were you having a period every 7-10 days pre op? If so, that sounds like it may be abnormal uterine bleeding and not an actual hormonal cycle (which are usually 21-28 days). I may be wrong about that. Chart your symptoms on the calendar and time will tell.

My father also gets migraines, but they're actually more common in women, usually because of cyclical hormonal fluctuations. To lessen their severity, avoid common triggers including chocolate, red wine and aged cheese, and increase your intake of magnesium from leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, or a good quality supplement. If you track your cycles as suggested, you should be able to predict when they'll happen, and make these changes proactively. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
