time off from work
Deb -
My hyst is scheduled for June and like you I was told 3-4 weeks - which I didn't seem right to me either. However, after talking to my doctor I found out the reason. Mine is being done by laprascope! Very short recovery time. Mine is being done as out patient and I will be out of work for 4 weeks.
Look through some of the old posts and you will find more answers.

Deb,
Yes, I felt great after 4 days. But from reading this Board for a while now, I realize I am not the "norm." I talked to my doctor and she told me to listen to my body. She allowed me to do what I felt I could do.
Now, I would NOT recommend this to anyone reading this, and I realize I will probably get slammed by some people on here. (I know everyone needs well). But, 2 days after I got home from the hospital, I was up cleaning my house....mopping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms...everything was dirty and I couldn't stand it. The next weekend, I went shopping for new living room furniture and my husband and I totally redecorated and painted our formal living room.
I honestly felt great! I hope your's goes as smoothly as mine.
Kim

Wow, Kim...I thought I was doing great...you beat me! I had a LAVH/BSO two weeks ago tomorrow and I too felt WONDERFUL after 4-5 days....I was back to light cleaning after being home 2 days from the hospital...dusting, loading dishwasher, laundry, sweeping, but did NOT vaccuum or carry laundry baskets...I am following the no lifting over 20 lbs rule!! I know that LAVH are a lot quicker recovery time...but I am not allowed to go back to work for 4-6 weeks...although I waitress and understand the reasoning behind it! I have my post op appt May 10th and will request to go back 2 days (only work 3 days normally), then will go back 3 days after 6 weeks! I too need the money...my step daughter graduates June 2nd and we are saving for her open house, but it has been VERY hard for me to rest and relax...my son was home sick ALL last week! I still get tired in the afternoons (more boredom than fatigue)...but mentally and physically I feel 100% better than I have in years!!

time off work
Man, guys. You've given me so much hope for a fairly quick recovery. I don't have any kids at home. It's just me and my husband so I think my recovery time would be fairly easy. I've been getting so much negative feedback so it's really great to hear from women who had positive results. It's not so much the operation that bothers me, it's the time afterwards. I'm in pretty good health so I feel that I would bounce back with very little trouble. I sure would like to get this over with so I can feel like myself again.

i'm going to chime in...
i don't think that the laproscopic procedure is that much of a faster recovery than an abdominal one...they're still taking the largest muscle in your body out, and whatever other work they have to do. it's not the outside "cut" that just needs recovering, but what's on the inside.
i had tah 3/27 -- felt great after 4 days, but continued to rest for two solid weeks. still felt great, and bored, so i proceeded to "straighten up" (dusting, vacuuming, including dragging vacuum up 16 stairs, toilets, etc.). felt pretty good until about 3 hours later and BOOM! i was in agony. my back took the brunt of compensating for a very hypersensitive stomach. I went to bed early that night and woke up and felt fine. so what did i do? you guessed it, i continued to "overdo". again, the back hurt so bad, it made me want to puke. i ended up calling the dr. for more pain meds (which i hadn't needed since day 4, but took anyway just to be on the safe side). he had me come in. told him my back was in agony and conveniently omitted the housework part of the story. he did internal and said that the vag cuff healed nicely and there was no reason i should be feeling so bad. he did give me more pain meds cuz he said pain wasn't condusive to a good recovery, told me to go home and continue resting till my 6 week appt.
i learned my lesson. i, too, felt great, but it was probably because i still had anesthesia in my system and had been taking pain meds (duh), and because i was very well rested.
i am bored out of my wits! my house has tumbleweeds rolling across the floor. i feel like gagging when i go into the bathroom. i want my house to be clean again and i want to go back to work at 6 weeks, but realize that if i don't take it easy, i will just push my recovery back that much longer.
read back in time to the posts of those that rushed thing. most of us have lived to regret it, and heaven forbid if you need to have some sort of "repair" surgery.
give yourself time! you'll be better than ever before you know it.
Love,
SueK

I'm glad you had such a quick bounce back y'all. Remember everyone is different though!
I felt great about 4 days after my surgery. My staples were removed that day and I felt like I could heal better or something. At 11 days I was driving as it was something I had to do. The doctor told me when I felt up to it. At my 2 week checkup they couldn't believe how fast I was healing. I drove my kiddo to school, came home, rested all day and then went and picked her up. I was 25 when I had my last surgery via an incision and 12 years makes a difference in bouncing back and healing. I was wiped out if I did anything but rest and walk. At 3 weeks I was doing more, like folding the laundry. Hubby wouldn't let me run it or carry anything. I didn't even lift any grocery bags until I was at 6 weeks.
I'm glad you have healed quickly and didn't have any effects on your healing. Listen to your body and what it's telling you. Stop and rest and don't over do, you will know the next day if you did, believe me!
