How Long Will I Need Help?
Well, the big day is coming up on Tuesday and I have been busy as a bee trying to freeze meals, clean house, and tie up loose ends. My question is this: How long will I need help after I get home from the hospital? My Mom is coming to help out with my kids (ages 11 & 7) until I get out of the hospital and feel better. My Mom wants to help out as long as possible, but she also has other obligations, and since she lives out of town, I don't want to keep her away from her home too long. My hubby will have to work, and his work schedule varies from day to day. Will I be able to get around and such? I'm sure my kids will help out too.

How Long Will I Need Help?
Hi NMiller,
Everyone heals differently so your mileage may vary ... however, I had a TAH due to fibroids and this was my experience:
Surgery: Monday
Release from hospital: Thursday morning
Home alone for the first three days with friends dropping in for a few hours at a time.
Sister visited to help from Sunday to following Friday morning (6 to 12 days post-op).
After that, I was fine with occassional visits from family and/or friends to help with grocery shopping, laundry and putting out garbage.
With children, I'd suggest that you ask you mom to stay for a few days after you arrive home and to be ready to stay for up to a week after you arrive home.
It was delightful having my sister on hand -- and very generous of her to be there -- but as far as coping, I was off pain-killers by 10 days post-op and at that point, I probably could have managed on my own (with drop-in occassional help) if it had been required.
My worst experience of overdoing it post-surgery was in the first few days when I was on my own and stayed on my feet too much. So I would make sure that you have help on hand for your first 6 to 7 days at home ... depending on how much help your family can offer.
Also, I was not anemic going into surgery, I did not have any other procedures and I think I was fortunate in having a fairly fast and smooth recovery. So, as noted above, your mileage may vary. Your body does let you know when you're overdoing it and it is time to rest.
I know it can be hard to accept help but if your mother offers it, take it. I think having my sister around allowed me to rest more and ensured a better and faster overall recovery although, like you, I was worried about the time she was taking away from her own life.
Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery.
Keep well,

How Long Will I Need Help?
Goodmorning!
I had a total hysterectomy and a bladder tact on Feb. 16th. I actually had an eperideral(?) for all of this which was wonderful. I can honestly say that I did not have much pain at all. I came home from the hospital on the 18th. Infact my husband and I stopped at the Olive Garden and had dinner on our 2 hour drive home. He stayed with me and cooked and waited on me through the weekend. By Monday I was on my own (moving slowly) but managing just fine. Within two weeks I was back to normal ( a little sore, black and blue, and moving not quite as fast). My husband said that I did to much too soon. I know everyone is different and I wish you the best and a fast recovery like I had. God bless and good luck!!!!!

How Long Will I Need Help?
I just got home yesterday and am thinking I am very lucky for having listened to these wonderful ladies before my surgery and obtained a nurse for my disabled husband for my recovery.. Now you won't need a nurse but my husband does.
I figured a week after I got home should be enough time to get me back on my feet and feeling pretty good... So far I am thinking my estimate is right on track....
I figure I will still be very sore after a week but I will be able to manage some of his care especially if I get the nurse to give him a shower before her last day... My daughters are also pitching in with their dad's care. So My situation is not the normal...
I am up and about a bit ... but taking it slow and easy... Hopefully to feeling myself soon....
Ces.
