Leaking 2.5 weeks after repairs and hysterectomy

Hi, I haven't been on here since I first joined way back in July or something. To be honest, I was a little afraid to visit, seeing lots of posts about pain and other scary things. But, I'm back now that I've had my operation. It wasn't nearly so scary as I'd feared, and neither is this website.

Anyway, I had a hysterectomy, kept ovaries, had anterior and posterior prolapse repair, AND had urethral sling installed. It was a lot and I'm healing ok, except:

I'm confused about some mild urine leaking since surgery. It's not bad, just a few drops sometimes when I bend or in the action of sitting down or standing up. It's as though those actions squeeze on something and it's comes out. It just feels gross. I stick a clean washcloth in my undies to absorb it. It's better than the bleeding and clots that I was enduring before! Still,I was hoping to be done with pads.

I intend to ask the doctor about it at my post-op in a couple weeks. For now I'm hoping that it is due to swelling, and maybe once the swelling goes away the leaking will stop. Does this sound like a reasonable explanation for the problem?

Re: Leaking 2.5 weeks after repairs and hysterectomy

Welcome back, one more voice. I am glad it wasn't as bad as you feared. Give it time. I have heard of leaking after slings. Sometimes they need to be loosened or just need time for swelling to go down.

I hope it is just swelling. Today was a good day. I noticed that I was able to sit squarely on both sit-bones. Also today I did not have any leaks, none that I could feel anyway.

Re: Leaking 2.5 weeks after repairs and hysterectomy

Hi One More Voice,
I had similar surgery September 6, 2017. I'm an active youngish 74. My reason for the surgery was the incontinence I've had for years. I discovered in the last couple years that I had bladder prolapse and uterus prolapse. I had tried Pelvic Therapy for a while and it only helped a little bit. Because I still had the leaking I decided to try the surgery to see if after that, maybe the pelvic therapy would help. I had made the mistake of not continuing to do hormone therapy very long after menopause. A new gyn doc explained to me a year ago why so many of us made that mistake, but now it's too late. I have a hunch that you should seriously consider hormone therapy

I also noticed the leak on about the 15th day after surgery -- when getting up from a sitting position, and sometimes when just walking. I had my 6 wek post op appointment last week and he mentioned 3 options to try. One I had never heard of which is called urethra bulking. We are trying a medication for 'overactive bladder' but I don't have confidence that this is what is happening or what will fix the problem.

I'd like to stay in touch to see if we can help each other get to the right solutions for each of us.

I use the Poise #2 pads (very slim) all the time.

Re: Leaking 2.5 weeks after repairs and hysterectomy

The frustrating thing was that I leaked very seldom before surgery. It was just when I had a hard sneeze or hard cough, and even then it wasn't like I wet my pants, just a few drops. Then after surgery I was needing cloths in my underwear! It was so bothersome, and I questioned my decision to get the sling put in.

But I think the problem seems to have resolved itself. In the last 3-4 days I haven't felt any leaking. Also, my surgery swelling in general has gone down significantly in the last 3-4 days, so there might be a connection. Yesterday I dared to leave the house without any protection and didn't have any problems. Still keeping fingers crossed a bit though!

Hope you figure something out!
