Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I live in Canada, where in this province I need a referral to see a specialist. I am booked for a TAH/possible BSO on February 11th and am in a lot of pain every day now. While I know hysterectomy is the best chance I have at getting my life back, I agree with you Sisters about getting another opinion.

However, my own OB/GYN from my pregnancies won't even see me for 20 minutes without a referral - and they are booking into March as it is. I cannot live in this constant, unrelenting pain for another 2-3 months, let alone the 5.5 weeks I already have to wait.

For the Sisters in Canada - what did you do? Did you wait for the second opinion, despite the horrible pain and other uncomfortable symptoms? Is there another way to get a second opinion without delaying the already booked surgery?

Thank you so much in advance!!

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

What is your diagnosis? Can you just make an appt with another gyn and pay for it yourself? I don't completely know how your system works.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I did not seek out a second opinion. I was given a set of options and the choice of hysterectomy was mine to make. I agree wait times are frustrating- I waited 8 weeks for a referral and then almost 8 months after that for my surgery. I am aware of some walk-in clinics(Alberta) that have visiting gynecologists but I did not pursue that avenue. For me the 8 month wait showed me why I chose hysterectomy. I am thankful for a successful surgery and to be back in charge of my body. Hang in there and good luck on your journey.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I am also in Alberta and things have moved so fast for me that I haven't really had time to even think about seeking and getting a second opinion, especially with losing a job, starting a job, Christmas and a visit from my sister (from England), she went home yesterday and my surgery is on Wednesday. I haven't had pain to deal with but I have had serious doubts and am still having doubts. Oh for a look into the future. Good luck with getting a second opinion if you really want one and good luck with your surgery.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

In Manitoba I don't know if it is possible to pay for such a thing - and if there is, I doubt it's a cost I could afford.

Things have moved fast enough (referred in September, saw specialist in November, Ultrasound a week later, surgery scheduled by December, but earliest is February (on a cancellation list as the pain is bad). I have Adenomyosis (I mean, I know they cannot confirm it without the tissue sample, but the ultrasound showed heterogeneous myometrium), an endometrial polyp with a feeding vessel near a C-Section deformity that is not understood yet, uterine prolapse, and suspected Endometriosis of the ovaries and bladder. So, quite a mess, and a very painful one at that.

Thank you for your well wishes. I think if the surgery were sooner I would almost feel better as the level of pain I'm in is constantly getting worse and I can only take pain relief (not that it helps) when I have some help with the kids.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I live in Canada and was able to travel within my province and see another specialist very quickly. I'm not sure if that's possible for you in Alberta but worth checking out! I ended up having my surgery an hour away from where I live and it was well worth it.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I'm in New Brunswick. My gyn and my gyn onc both said the same thing - TAH/BSO with vertical incision - so I went with what they said. It really wouldn't be possible for me to get an opinion from a second gyn onc, because our province only has two and they both work together.

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I live in BC and you need a referral to get an apt with any gyno. I went with the gyno my GP referred me to and I did not get a second opinion. I trusted my GP's decision to send me to him and I heard good things about my gyno.

That being said, if you want a second opinion I think you would need a referral from your GP. Perhaps book an apt with your GP and voice your concerns/desire for a second opinion.

As I under it, it would be illegal for the doctor to accept that money under the Canada Health Act. The provinces are mandated by the Act to cover the cost of a wide variety of health services. However, it's illegal for a doctor to accept money for a service that would normally be covered by the province, for example, by a patient who wants to jump the waiting line.

The reason for this is that if people could pay to jump line, then soon there'd be two different standards of service: fast service for people with money and an infinitely long wait line for people without money. It's a reasonably fair system, although sometimes a somewhat slow one. :-)

Re: Cannot Get a Second Opinion (Canada)

I was lucky as I saw the GP, then gyno, then the gyn/onc. Only the GP said just take the ovary and tumor. The other 2 said take it all. I agreed with the gyn's'. Took out all of it..
