Pain tolerance varies for each of us and also depends upon so many different factors: extent of surgery, our physical health, other conditions, additional surgeries, reactions to medications...whew!
But I truly think the key to helping manage your pain is to be open with your nurses and doctors. They are there to help keep you comfortable, so please let them
Know how you feel. One med made me a bit nauseous, so the nurses had that pain med switched.
The key in my opinion to best managing your pain is to follow the recommended dosages and time intervals given my your doctor. This s not the time to think "no pain, no gain". Your body will need to concentrate on healing, not fighting pain.
So plan on being good patients and taking your pain meds as scheduled. Retire your red capes and plan on resting and taking good care of yourself.

Welcome to all the Ladies having surgery this week!
A few things that made my initial recovery easier:- Stool softener
- Gas X
- Chewing gum (helps with gas)
- Peppermint tea
- Ginger Ale
- Moist wipes rather than toilet tissue
- Heating pad
- Ice pack
- Pillow pet / Body pillow
- Chapstick
- Notepad and pen (for keeping track of medications)
Here are a couple of links you may find helpful: Deep breaths, you can do this! The nerves can be really overwhelming. Try to keep busy, clean the house, cook/freeze meals, and get out of the house and have fun enjoying your family/friends. Take quiet time for yourself and enjoy a bath and stock up on movies and books for your recovery.
Remember: You are not alone!

Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 07, 2015
Hello! My name is Jodi and I'm having a TLH with possible lymph node removal on Tuesday. I'm 46 and have been dealing with uncontrollable bleeding from large fibroids for over a year now. I was schwduled to have surgey last November but it was delayed due to being diagnosed with diabetes during the pre-op bloodwork. Now my blood sugar is under very good control so it's time to get on with things.
I am quite nervous about the whole thing, I have other complications such as Fibromyalgia, arthritis, and need to have both shoulders and both knees replaced.
The hospital I'm going to is 1.5 hours away so hubby and I are leaving tomorrow and staying at a hotel right by the hospital. I have to be there at 6:30am.
I have an amazing oncology surgeon that I really trust, and a hudband that couldn't be any more supportive if he tried, he's such a phenominal blessing in my life and I feel so grateful.
I would greatly appreciate any prayers and good thoughts sent my way, and of course I'll be praying for everyone no matter what stage of pre-op or post-op you are currently in.
Hugs, Jodi

Coffeebeans!
I also have an autoimmune disease and it can make a difference in our recovery. Please take a look at the attached articles, as there is helpful information to know both pre- and post-op. Make sure all your doctors are on board, discuss your condition and all concerns with your Anesthesiologist, and have a pain management plan in place beforehand. No detail is insignificant, something that may seem like no big deal to me turned out to be very important for my Anesthesiologist & my Surgeon to know.

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Jun 07, 2015
Hi there
My hyster is on Friday this week. I have 2 fibroids that are about 5 cm each and a cyst on one ovary. Dr. thinks he can get the fibroids and uterus vaginally but that he may need to do a LAVH. I have been putting this thing off for years as the fibroids have caused more and more problems. Last year, my OB/GYN said it was time for a hyster and I scheduled the surgery, but then I ran into a friend who suggested I get a second opinion. I went to her dr. who asked what my biggest complaint was about them and I told him it was the heavy bleeding. I could only go for an hour in between bathroom trips which made meetings at work impossible. I also had major bloating during each cycle, making me look 4 months pregnant. Dr. said the fibroids thrive on estrogen, so they would grow and then shrink a little each month. SInce I wanted mainly to stop the blood, he put me on provera, which did the trick. Have been on it for a year with no period at all with frequent ultrasounds by him to check on the uterine lining and fibroids. He is concerned that I can't stay on it too much longer, and especially not into menopause, since he said it causes breast cancer.
So, last check up, the fibroids had almost doubled in size and I was swollen beyond belief. None of my work clothes fit so I scheduled the surgery. Dr. ordered the CA 125 blood test so that he can check for cancer but he is not worried about it. He wants to take the uterus because I am 50 now and there is no point in keeping it with all the trouble it is causing me.
I am anxious because I am fit, work out and have always had a healthy diet. I am a runner and know that I will have to sit still for a long time to recover. I also dread the swelly belly and talk of weight gain after this surgery. I have decided to do it because i know it will improve my quality of life. Any advice is appreciated.
