Pilates - when safe?

Hi. Any ideas when I could go back to my very gentle beginners' Pilates class? I asked at hospital, but they couldn't say. I am currently 14 days post-TAH. Thanks.

Re: Pilates - when safe?

Ask your doctor. Pilates is an ab focused exercise and 14 days post op you are still healing inside!

Re: Pilates - when safe?

I'd love to know this as I've just bought it for my Wii - not brave enough to go to a class as I have NO coordination.

Re: Pilates - when safe?

Thanks for your replies, ladies. I realise it's early days yet, but the beginner Pilates class I was attending until my TAH is very gentle and personalised to the people there. Some of the exercises are the same as the ones taught at hospital to promote healing. I suppose it's hard to generalise because some people do advanced Pilates which would obviously not be sensible too soon.

Tituba, I would recommend going to a beginners' class when you are healed enough. Before I started going, I tried following an online one which made me feel uncoordinated, but it's quite different in class. The teacher is really clear and talks you through at your own pace, and we all support each other's progress and enjoy a bit of humour. I walk out of those classes with a real sense of well-being. So you can see why I'm missing it at the moment!

Re: Pilates - when safe?

I can appreciate how you feel. My Yoga class makes me feel good physically and mentally.

My Dr said depending on pain, I could go back to Yoga in 4 to 6 weeks. My Yogi said when I come back to listen to my body and only do the moves I can do comfortably. I plan on taking a lite class in a week. I will be 32 days post op.

But, I will be taking very, very slow. Even yoga is not worth a set back!

Re: Pilates - when safe?

You all seem to progressing quite well, I should move faster but the thought of hernia scares me. I'll take it slow.
Cheers ladies.

Silver Swan, thanks for that, will make some enquiries and see if I can find a class nearby.

Re: Pilates - when safe?

You're welcome, Tituba. Good luck with that.

Sajeda, beware the "should" word! Take it easy for as long as you need to. Be kind to yourself. My physio said it takes 6-12 weeks for the tissues to heal, sometimes longer.

Saltyiceskater, I see we had our ops the same day :-) My Pilates teacher says I could go back after Easter. I'll be 5 weeks PO and like your Yogi she thinks I'll be fine if I listen to my body.

Lovely to talk with you all and I hope today will be a good healing day for you.
