hip and lower back pain

I had my surgery a while back 2008 and I have had hip and lower back pain ever since. Does anyone else experience this? I took steriods for about 5 days and the pain went away. Do I have like fluid or something?

Re: hip and lower back pain

I'm so pleased i've found this thread! I've been suffering pain in my lower back, hip area and left leg since surgery last year. Initially they said it is possible for them to have hit on a nerve during surgery my doctor has advised no bending, stretching or heavy lifting, i cannot take anti-inflammatory meds due to pre existing medical condition, have been advised physio won't help and I need an occupational workplace assessment.

I don't have a full nights sleep as my back goes stiff, I can't sit or stand too long and feel like i'm in limbo.. i'm cheerful but feel achey and tired but in a strange way I have more energy than I did pre-op!!!

Not sure if this is usual or not but any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Re: hip and lower back pain

I am the same way. I sit I hurt, when I get up I hurt, if I walk to much I hurt. My lower back and right hip hurts and aches all day. It is just horrible. No matter what I do I don't get any relief.

I never get a whole nights sleep. If I sleep to long on one side I have to wake up and turn as it hurts too much. So it is nice to hear someone else is having the same problems. I keep telling my husband, this all happened after surgery, thinking it will get better. I did get some steriods once and it helped alot, but I can't stay on those forever.

I am going to the doctor tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do. I too was on anti-inflammatory's and it just did not help much. Somedays I feel I am in terrible pain just to do the simple things in life.

Thanks for replying.

Re: hip and lower back pain

Are you guys taking hormones ? I had terrible hip pain soon after my surgery and once I started the Premarin it went away within a couple days. I assume it has to do with the stabilization of the calcium in your bones. In my situation nothing helped the pain, even the percocet that I was taking post-op. Maybe your situations are totally different. I just thought I would put that out there. Hope you find some answers !!

Re: hip and lower back pain

No I am not. I have one ovary left and had my hormone levels taken about 1 year ago, but they said I didn't need them. But it is so painful. Like you have arthritis or something. I will have to talk to the doctor about it. Doesn't hormone replacement some of that cause cancer?

Re: hip and lower back pain

don't know if this will help or apply to your situation but I had hip pain prior to surgery and finally got help: starting at a bone dr, getting an MRI, him sending me to a pain specialist, him sending me to Physical therapy. Seems that things get crunched in the pelvic hip/back area and if the muscles aren't working evenly you get pulling and stretching and pinching. I actually kept up on the PT exercises and that is what helped the most!
Good luck

Re: hip and lower back pain

I copy and pasted this information from a pharmacy resource that I use. In the estrogen-only sub-study of WHI, NO increased risk of breast cancer in estrogen-treated women compared to placebo was found, even in women who used estrogen replacement therapy for 25 years or longer. From my understanding as a pharmacist, the increased risk of breast cancer is more of an issue with combined HRT (estrogen and progestin) taken together. I think the general concensus of most doctors is to take the lowest possible dose for the least amount of time unless there is an absolute contraindication. I have even seen people take estrogen supplements on an every other day schedule. All women taking estrogen with or without a progestin should receive an annual clinical breast examination, perform monthly self-examinations, and have regular mammograms as recommended by their health care professional (info copied from Clinical Pharmacology website).

Each person has a different situaton and it should be an individualized plan that is agreed upon between the patient and the physician. Do your research and ask a lot of questions. Nobody knows your situation better than you do. This website has prompted me to do more research and get answers to my questions, sometimes to things that my doctor would not give me a straight answer about.

Re: hip and lower back pain

Hi sorry I've been busy and couldn't get online since posting... but yes I agree I never get a full nights sleep and feel so tired and it often takes me an hour in a morning to get fully stretched and mobile. I now do my grocery shopping online as the shopping cart pulling makes it worse, I can't even stand to chop veg or cook for lengthy periods as that too makes it ache.

Yes I'm on HRT patches which have been brilliant stabilising my flashes/night sweats but not done alot for my weight which I know impacts on my back/hip pain... my main problem this week has been my left leg which suffered after the operation resulting in an emergency doctor being called out .... they did say it could be a sciatic nerve damaged but one doctor and one consultant has told me physiotherapy won't help and I can't take anti inflammatory medication due to pre existing illness!

I even tried reiki which I love albeit I fell asleep during treatment and without me saying anything she sensed something and asked 'have you got problems with your left hip?' ... and sure enough after that treatment I did experience tingling in the left area... coincidence/psychological or healing... I'm not sure.

I'm sorry for everyone that as/is suffering like this and given the information supplied maybe I should challenge my doctor and try physiotherapy... interesting about things getting crunched up in the pelvic area because my stomach does 'pull' which made me think maybe the muscle is still weak?

Re: hip and lower back pain

well that makes sense if the nerve is damaged then it won't help. IF it is nerves pinching then that is another story. Or if it is muscles that are off.

good luck!
