smoking
Hi all. I quit smoking one year ago July 22. I had tried many times before unsuccessfully and I tried all the methods (except hypnotism). The last time was different and easy. It was stupid easy. All I did was read a book. Really. Believe it. I was told about the book while out smoking by a person who had read the book and quit. I signed it out of the local library, but you can also buy it from the book store. Look it up. It's called "The Easyway to Quit Smoking" by Allan Carr. It has no scare tactics. EVERYONE I know who has read this book HAS SUCCESSFULLY QUIT. I have no urges! Read the book! What's the harm? The author used to be a chain smoker. If I can do it, you can too! There are risks associated with any surgery, why raise the anti?

smoking
I was in the hospital for a few days before my first surgery, and not feeling well enough to go out for a cig, so I ended up having 10 days of not smoking. I did have some coughing going on (not sure if it was due to the recently quitting smoking, the double doses of anasthesia, etc., but it HURT to cough!!) I would recommend taking some cough drops in to suck on - good for the oral fixation as well as soothing your throat and lungs.
To be honest (and maybe I am strange in this?!), the smell of smoke, and most foods, etc. made me extremely nauseous the first few days. My DH is still smoking, and when he would come back in from outside, I made him brush his teeth because the smell made me sick...
I am definitely tempted to go back to it, but I figure now that I have almost a month smoke free, I need to keep pushing along...
Good luck to you - I know how hard it is to quit having done it a couple of times over the last 19 years! REMEMBER A PILLOW OVER YOUR BELLY IF YOU START TO COUGH - HOLD YOURSELF TIGHTLY TO RELIEVE SOME OF THE PAIN!!

If you have quit, please don't go back. Smoking is bad for your hair, teeth, skin and bones. It slows down your ability to heal and inhibits your body's natural defenses. Not to mention inhibiting your oxygen supply.

I've smoked for nearly thirty years. I started CHANTIX last Sunday and my quit date will be this Sunday. I must admit... after trying every other quit technique... this is the first one that has killed the nicotine addiction. Now I'm just down to the habitual addiction, triggers and such. Hubby is waiting to see how I "DO"... Not quite the support I had hoped for from him, but he is an amazing soul, so supportive, he is my life line of strength and who will succeed at this as well. My advantage honestly, is I'll be sedated and on great pain meds... to dole away the time span it takes to heal.
MY bennie for chopping out my nasty 4 month preggie organ and finally quit cancer sticks at the same time... purdy apportune..eh?

I am a smoker and I quit and put the patch on week ago.. I told the doctor and he said to keeping wearing it and to wear it the day of surgery since I had already done it. I know in the paperwork they gave me they state you should quit 6-8 weeks before surgery and if not then don't quit right before because your body is use to it and also when you quit you go through that period of coughing up stuff to clear your lungs out. So not sure what to tell you but thats what I was told.

My hubby gave 60% of his liver to his sister exactly one year ago... but he was po'd that the staff told him he needed to be smoke free for 30 days before they would even schedule the surgery. Funny thing was, the surgical staff said they only needed the be assured he hadn't smoked 48 hrs before his scheduled surgery. He still whines aboiut being "LIED TO..." WAH-WAHHHH!

With the Chantix, I've been smoke free for two weeks now. The nice thing is the physical addiction is gone. The mental addiction is alot easier to overcome when there is no physical need. Good luck!

I, too, am a smoker (about a pack a day). I had a TAH on 8/7. I had to stay in the hospital for an extra day due to low oxygen counts (in the low 70's). Just another reason to consider if you are thinking of quitting before you go in. I have cut way back, and am hoping to get something to help me quit all the way.
