Upcoming hysterectomy 6/9: Question post surgery bleeding

I am scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy on June 9 I will be bleeding when I go in for surgery due to non-stop bleeding for several months cause my large fibroids should I expect to bleed after surgery and if so for how long. Thanks for any input. Looking forward to getting this over with and feeling great soon!

Re: Question post surgery bleeding

I didn't have any bleeding post surgery, but you could have some light bleeding for a few weeks.

Re: Question post surgery bleeding

Hi mimi123-

I had TAH BSO. I was told to expect, and did have, discharge for six weeks post op (ugh!). For the first few days, I had minor amounts of blood. Then the discharge became clear and yellowish waxy. I used ultra-thin maxi's and changed twice a day.

You should not bleed much, but you may have other discharge like me. Your doctor should let you know what to expect, and if it is too much blood (I was told filling a pad in an hour) then you call.

My period had just ended prior to my surgery on 6-1. I had fibroids and an enlarged uterus making my periods rather heavy, but for what I had, my doctor was amazed that my periods weren't hell. Only one last month was one I would consider hell. It had lasted 7 long days with heavy bleeding. I had minor bleeding that evening after my surgery. I used a pad for a few hours, and I've had no bleeding at all since. You should be just fine once it's all done!

I had some minor bleeding the first few days, none after that.

I had spotting/discharge that stopped and started at random throughout the first 5-6 weeks post op. It was light and I didn't even need a liner (which was lucky because I couldn't tolerate panties!). I just saw the discharge when I wiped. What I wasn't expecting was it to vary in color... At times it was brown, dark red, bright red, pink, clear and orange.

Upcoming hysterectomy 6/9: Question post surgery bleeding

I am 3.5 weeks post op for fibroids and I have been spitting/light bleeding since day 6 or 7 after surgery. I had one day where it was rather heavy. My doctor said bleeding after is the exception to the rule but normal none the less. I was truly not expecting it, but it can happen.

I had some in the hospital right after surgery. I wore a light pad the next day when I came home but barely had anything so stopped using them. I have a lovely supply of maxipads to get rid of!

A suggestion for your leftover feminine hygiene supplies: donate them to a women's shelter, food bank or homeless shelter. Imagine having horrendous periods like some of us here have experienced... And being homeless? The products are so expensive, so pay it forward and put them to good use!
