What will the doctors & nurses expect of me?

My surgery is in nine hours. Can anyone tell me what the nurses or doctors will expect of me before I am able to leave? Such as walking or using the bathroom on my own? And about how long does a TVH take?

I am still a lady in waiting so I cannot help you with your question.

Hi there... Wow, 9 hours huh? You will be fine! I had to walk around without help, not alot but some.. and I had to pee on my own... That was pretty much it... NO big expectations or anything, just some simple necessities to assure you will be fine.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!!! I didn't and it ended me back in the hospital the day after I got out... Drink lots of water, try to walk when you think you can, and get lots and lots of rest!!!!!!! I will be thinking of you and I hope all is well... GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! DIANA

They will want to be sure that your intestines are working - so that will be that you are passing gas, or that you have a bm.

(In my case passing gas was sufficient).

They will also want to be sure you aren't running a fever.

Not sure exactly how long surgery takes, but I believe it is about 1.5-2 hours on average.

Yes, all body functions must be in good working order without fever. Bowels can be sluggish to recover and you'll know when you feel up to going home.

Good luck to you! Like the others said, walk a lot, drink lots of water, and rest.

my experience only:
TvH/A&P repair took 30 minutes.
was in recovery 1.5 hrs
to be discharged:
keep down solid food
have bowels sounds
pass gas
no fever
walk on my own
oral pain meds
urinate (if you cant urinate this will not necessarily keep you in the hospital---they'll insert a catheter and send you on your way)
remember that you do not want to be in the hospital any longer than medically necessary due to all of the germs and you being a breeding ground for infection.

They just want you to be yourself and relax. You will be in great hands!! Let them cater to what you need.

So most important...always tell them how you are REALLY feeling. It helps them monitor your progress and pain medicine.
