Surgery postponed again!
My surgery TAH/BSO has just been postponed again due to a bladder infection. I was originally scheduled for 10/28, but was told on the 27th I was postponed to 11/4 due to a bladder infection. A week of antibiotics later, I have been postponed again because it still hasn't completely cleared. This is really frustrating. My husband and sister took days off from work last week and this week, for nothing. So many people want to be there for me, but it is frustrating to keep cancelling on them.
I am ready to hide the new date when I get it so that no one misses any more work. Is this something I can do alone in the hospital, or do I really need people there while I am in? I will have help once home, but I hate that my loved ones keep missing work and my surgery postpones.
Would appreciate any feedback on needing help in the hospital.

Re: Surgery postponed again!
Where I live your family can only come in with you while you are in pre op. The actual surgery they are not allowed. When I had my done my daughter and hubby were there. We got there at 7:30 in the morning. My surgery wasn't until 10:30. Once I got changed in pre op they were allowed to come back. Once I went to the OR they didn't see me again until I was in my room. That was almost 6pm. WOW! They were so tired of waiting. They left as soon as they saw me in my room. I was in recovery waiting for a room. So, my answer would be no if you can do it alone.

Re: Surgery postponed again!
Thanks for the reply. I think I will just be tired and drugged and want to rest. I really don't want people sitting around watching me sleep.
I think the nurses would help me with anything I actually need, like getting out of bed.

Re: Surgery postponed again!
Have them stay until you go for surgery but after you will be in recovery and then up in your room... and you may not feel the best from the Anesthesia... So if they do come to visit, Day 2 would be better. My Mom had her hysto on Oct 7th... and she doesn't remember anything until the day after except wanting to sleep.
Last time I have a Laparotomy I felt awful the first night so I was happy no one came to visit. It was nice to have company the next day when I was finally up to walking around, they didn't want me doing a whole lot of that alone. Also someone to talk to is nice as well. Maybe they could bring you in a Portable DVD player or your laptop... I am hoping to have mine. to watch DVD's and Keep my friends in the loop as most don't live in the same city I do.

Re: Surgery postponed again!
I had my DH and a couple of friends there while I was in surgery. After that people only came for short visits. The hospital staff gave me all the care I needed.
It's good that you will have help at home - get all the pampering possible

Re: Surgery postponed again!
Hi,
I would not try and do it alone. It sounds like you have a great support system with your husband and sister. Let them be there for you. You could always ask them at this point what they want to do? You can not help that you are not in the best health needed at this moment to have the surgery. Maybe keep them on a "stand by " mode for the next surgery date?
My husband being there with me at the hospital was one of the best decisions I made. You should have an advocate there for you in case you can not speak for yourself. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon! K

Re: Surgery postponed again!
I had my best friend drive me to the hospital and another friend & husband met us there - all were in pre op - only my best friend with me in recovery - then she & my other friend were with me in the room - husband took 2 days off work although I told him not to - then my mom came to town the next day and drove me home and stayed with us for a week and helped me

Re: Surgery postponed again!
I was scheduled to have my LSH on this past Thursday and had to postpone due to my fathers' untimely death. His funeral is on Monday and I knew that I would not be fully able to attend the service, deal with family etc. in such a short time. My new date is January 14. RIP Dad!

Re: Surgery postponed again!
The Hospital Staff will care for you, so it is a personal choice whether you need anyone there. Recovery takes weeks so maybe save your credits till then as you are reluctant to muck people around again. It really is up to you.
