Do not understand my surgery help?

I was reading my report from the hospital and it said I had a total vaginal hysterectomy, pubovaginal sling, cystoscopy and ulterosaccral vault suspension I have no clue what any of this means. Also how long am I going to be so tired and depressed? I also still feel something down there at times and have to wear a panty liner I was a police officer but due to a car accident I'm left unable to work in any capacity according to doctor help?

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

Stubs- I would first say go over your procedures with your surgeon. But I can tell you my understanding of your procedures.

Total Vaginal Hysterectomy - the removal of the uterus and cervix through the vagina.

Pubovaginal sling- usually done for stress incontinence (leaking usually associated with coughing, sneezing, laughing etc).

Cystoscopy- using a special type of scope this is a look I to your bladder to ensure no bladder or ureter damage during your procedures.

Uterosacral vault suspension- suspension if the vagina using your uterosacral ligaments that previously supported your uterus. This is to create the "vault".

Again, an explanation is always best from your surgeon as they can give accurate detail as to what's done and why. But I hope this helps at least a little.

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

Stubs, re: fatigue and depression, have a little patience with yourself. You're only 11 days past surgery, and recovery typically takes six weeks. At this point in your recovery you should be taking things easy and pampering yourself. Shorts walks and sitting upright - to the degree that your body is comfortable with! - are good. Naps are also good. :-)

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

I also had TVH. I'm 3 weeks 1 day now. Honestly week 1 I don't remember I was so out of it. But it does get better with time. Im still spotting since day 1. Im feeling more like me at weeks 3. But I know it will still be a long journey to get back to work. After my 6 weeks hopefully get a all clear so I can get my body back for work. Im a security guard and it takes a toll on the body. Luckily I have a great boss who know im taken 10 weeks off just to make sure.

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

Stubs

On the recovery conversation....2/4 to 6/8 weeks is initial recovery. If you have more work done, as in the sling, it could be more like 10/12 weeks. Full recovery can take 6 to 12 months.

At this stage with anesthesia getting out of your system, the disruption of hormones even if you kept your ovaries and the trauma of surgery you need to give yourself time to rest and heal. I tell people this is a marathon not a sprint.

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

Supposedly six week recovery. I'm on short term disability but my job is paying 100%. The disability company approved six weeks of leave for me. They said I could have more time if needed. I've noticed I have days that are so good I think I'll likely go back at week four. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I'll be back before 2014.

Re: Do not understand my surgery help?

Check with your doctor on that, Stubs. I was back to work at 4 weeks at a part-time desk job with restrictions on lifting. Life was pretty much back to normal at 8 weeks. But you had some extra work done in your surgery, plus your job is much more physically demanding than mine.
