6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

My surgery was 6 weeks ago TODAY, and I'm still in pain! I'm having menstrual like cramping, all along where my incision is; so bad I couldn't sleep last night. I can't seem to stand up straight, and it's just awful. I'm supposed to have an ultrasound Monday, but was considering calling my doctor this morning (my doc isn't in, but they'll page her <I think> or tell me if I need to head to the ER). My husband says I should just wait; she'd given me a script for 5 mg. Lortab a few weeks ago, but they don't touch it. I was just wondering what everyone else thinks, because honestly w/ my husband, he's not ever been/going to be here, so...ugh. I'm so tired of hurting.

I should add that the pain wraps down around my back and into the inside of my thighs, and down into the top area of my vagina. It's so painful!

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

Well, I am 11 weeks postop from a LATVH with both ovaries removed and I still have pain on a daily basis. I have the peroiod like cramps that get worse with activity. I am still having some problems with my bladder. I am not able to do hardly any bending at all because when I do the pain is more intense afterwards. My Gyn is not much help in that he just says that it will take me longer to heal than most. I got kinda fed up with my gyn and so went to see my PCP on tuesday of this week. After she looked at my pathology report she told me that no wonder I was still hurting and not able to do too much. She said that with everything I had wrong with me that I am doing better than she would have expected. She said that it would probably be at least another 4 weeks before I will feel more like myself. I will say this that when I take it easy I am able to just take Motrin 800mg every 7-8 hours now instead of every 4 hours. So while I am not 100% , I guess I am getting better.

If your pain medicine is not helping your pain it might be a good idea to call your Dr. and just let them know that and see what they say. Good Luck in your recovery!

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

Thank you! I had a TAH with both ovaries removed, and ended up having to have a blood transfusion because she nicked my bladder. She said it would take longer to heal, but I didn't think I'd hurt THIS much. I was feeling better a few weeks ago, then I regressed, and as I'm sure you know, it's just frustrating. I'm on the 800 mg Ibuprofen as well, same regimen as you, but that doesn't seem to be helping either. I hope you feel better soon too!

I also lost a lot of blood during surgery but refuse blood transfusion due to unpleasant experience before. SO now I am trying to get that built back up and I am sure that slows my healing down as well.

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

I had a TAH/kept both ovaries 6 weeks ago. During my first few weeks I didn't have much pain. I haven't taken anything for pain recently. Just this week the stomach pain/discomfort has seemed to be worse. I have started using an ice pack which seems to help. I go back to work on the 22nd and I need to be able to fit in my clothes.

I had a lot of pain at first, then it subsided, and now it's back with a vengence. I've tried heat and/or ice, ibuprofen, lortab, rest...nothing seems to be helping. I can't lay flat on my back at night because it hurts, I can't curl up because it hurts...it's really, really driving me nuts. My husband too, I care to bet... I hope your swelling goes down soon, and your pain goes away!

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

I had a LASVH 6 wks ago. I'm still having pains. I went back to work half-days for 3 days this week. I came home exhausted on Friday. I went with DH to Walmart to pick up my new comfort chair. I came home exhausted had to lay down in the van. I couldn't take sitting anymore. That night did nothing but laid in bed. In the morning laid in bed until 11:00 felt better took another motrin. Now I am ready to lay down again. Bad pain yesterday and today. I didn't think I was overdoing it at work. I teach 6th grade math and went home at 11:40 am. I am just going to rest this weekend and maybe get a massage from my favorite place. My back is hurting too!

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

Hiya girls,

I'm in a similar situation in that my pain got worse but after talking about it to a friend I realised it was because I had been doing a lot more. I think I am experiencing a slower recovery and take more pain meds than most sisters on the site but someone has to be the slowest in the race!! (Don't worry, I know it's not really a race!)

I also had TAH/BSO followed by emergency surgery 2 days later for massive internal bleeding/bladder damage/huge haematoma/had the sheath of my stomach cut open blah blah blah, so my surgeon said I won't "turn the corner" until 12 weeks instead of the 'usual' 6.

And to be fair, although I feel a lot better than 3 weeks ago (I am now 5 weeks post op) when I was in bed all the time except for bathroom trips, I am now on slightly less pain meds and am up and out of bed a bit more.

But in doing more - loading the dishwasher, sweeping the floor, walking in town etc - I have increased the pain I am in.

So I share your frustration and disappointment that there is still pain, but it sounds as if its just that you are healing slowly. maybe its time to reduce your activity for a few days before gradually increasing again?

Good luck and lots of love,

Re: 6 weeks post op, STILL hurting.

Wow! I thought I had it bad. My surgery went really well. IHope you feel better soon. I wish I can go shopping I miss shopping most of all. Sometimes I go to Kohls or Target but I don't stay too long because I know the consequences. Just make sure you relax and take of yourself. Let the house go or call for maid service to clean your house.
