Estradiol and Chest Pain

Post Op, surgery was July 6.
I started Estradiol 1mg on July 29.

Starting on July 30, I felt like i had a pulled muscle in my shoulder area....and everyday it has progressed in to chest/shoulder/back and arm, all on the right side of my body. when i breathed in, it felt a bit painful...i feel more like i pulled a major muscle or have a major crick in my neck, jjust in my back, shoulder and chest area, upper arm...

i called my physician's office and then had to call the on call doc at the hospital and was told to not take my next Estradiol dose, and to come to the ER if it got worse...

so today i finally get to speak to a nurse at the office, who seemed so clueless and had to call me back.

she stated that it was not the Estradiol causing my issues, if i was concerned, go to the ER, that the doc stated it was probably pulmonary embolism, not caused by the meds and when I asked is there a different med they can call me in to try and she said NO, as all estrogens are teh same and if i cant take 1, i cant take any of them, there isnt anything they can do for me medically at the office, to go to the ER if i think i need to or think my issues are serious enough to go to the ER , but otherwise, we cant help you, we will see you in 3 weeks for your next appt you have scheduled...

okay, so now im frustrated...have no clue what to do...and am sitting here searching to see if anyone else has experienced the same symptoms or issues and what to do..

any advice?

Re: Estradiol and Chest Pain

The only advice we can responsibly give you is to go to the ER. Chest pain is not something to fool around with. It could be nothing, or it could be, as the DR said, a pulmonary embolism, which is very serious.

As far as the estradiol question goes, there are transdermal delivery methods (patches and creams) which involve much lower doses than the oral meds and don't tax the liver the way oral meds do. There is some evidence that the transdermals have less risk of blood clots in women predisposed to them, but most DRs will not prescribe any estrogen at all to women who have had a pulmonary embolism while on estrogen.

Please let us know what you find out at the ER.

-Linda

Re: Estradiol and Chest Pain

Most definitely. I am going to go by there tonight after we go to our Parent/Teacher Orientation as school starts on monday. and the hospital is just across the street, well a block away, from the school. how convenient huh?

so we shall see what happens. i was looking up info and found something from the Mayo clinic that stated that pulmonary embolisms can be increased risks when on birth control or estrogen for HRT.

so maybe i need a lower dose or something. or a different one.

will keep ya posted on what I find out.

A pulmonary embolism is a life and death situation. Please, do not wait one minute longer before heading to ER to see if this is what you are dealing with.

Re: Estradiol and Chest Pain

OMG!!! I can't believe the doctor said it might be a pulmonary embolism and then just left it at that. That is just awful. I agree that you need to get to the ER to get checked out right away. Chest pains in general need to be checked, much less a possible pulmonary embolism.
Please let us know what you find out.
