Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

I am new here, had a Davinci robotic hysterctomy on Monday, (april 18) removed uterus, ovaries, tubes, cerix. Bladder was torn on expulsion of organs through vagina. stitched up immediately but now i have to wear a catheter and urine bag for two weeks. This is so much worse than pain from surgery which isnt that bad. The catheter is awful. Surgeon said it wasnt from the surgery, bladder may have moved during c section 13 years ago and tore when touched by other organs coming out. Is this possible or was it surgeon's mistake? so disappointed...

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

Hello! I had a vaginal hyster. on April 13 for a prolapsed uterus. I had a catheter on when I woke up after surgery. I stayed in hospital 4 days. I was sent home with catheter & went for a check up yesterday. Dr. said he wants me to keep it in for another week! I was so upset! He told me it's the best for my recovery so I don't get an infection of tear any stitches. The thought of it for another 6 days depresses me. Trying to stay positive!~ It really isn't pleasant carrying it around all over the place. But I can't leave the house anyway! I hate the pressure it causes like I have to pee all the time! Day at a time! If anyone else has experienced having to wear one of these for awhile & has any comfort tips let me know! Good Luck!

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

I had my cath in for 10 days, due to a bladder tear when the retractor was removed. And my gosh do I remember that horrible need to pee feeling, and the worry with BM's that with pushing it might come flying out! LOL
Worst time for me was taking a shower, the water gave me such a horrid urge to pee, but my way out of it was concentrating, doing some deep breathing, and trying to distract myself.
I worse loose undies, and tried to make sure that some of the tubing laid in the crease of my leg, to give me extra room in case the bag got pulled on. Sleeping was easiest when I put a pillow between my legs.
Made sure I kept taking the stool softeners to keep the BM's easy! I was so desperate to have the dang thing removed by the mid part of the second week, I could almost scream! So I started a countdown, and thought to myself everyday.... at this time on Friday, I'll be cath free!
It's been 2 weeks since I had it removed, but every now and then I still find my self walking with my thighs clenched, like I am still worried I have the tubes hanging from me, and scared they'll fall out. Too funny!
It's hard to stay positive, I know. But soon you'll be on the other side of it, and look back and say, Thank goodness that's over!

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

I didn't have a cath in as long as you, but did have one during/after surgery, which they removed in the hospital. To remove it, the nurse had me sit on the toilet, and the cath needle just slid right out. No pain or discomfort!

Last time I had a cath was during the birth of my second child due to complications. It really hurt when they took that one out, but now I realize it was because they basically pulled it out while I was lying in bed. If you are able to give them the suggestion, tell them to do it over the toilet and let it gently slide out. When I compare my two experiences with cath, that removal method worked the best for me.

Oh, and I even had a small tinkle right after she took the cath out. No pain or problems urinating after the cath, thank goodness.

I hope the time with the cath goes by quickly. Just rest/sleep/read/watch TV as much as possible and don't get up and "do" things around the house so much. Other than a shower or getting ourselves food, we are supposed to be resting now anyway. (Hard for me too, I know).

Best wishes,
Anna

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

It didn't hurt when they removed my cath. A little uncomfy feeling, but no pain. And lots of relief! Everyone is different though, I know I have a higher pain thresh-hold than most. My last surgery before the hyster, was for my gallbladder, and it did sting a bit when they removed the cath.
This time, I had a little stinging the first few times I urinated after the removal, but it went away pretty quickly. Hope all goes well for you! =D

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

I've got a stint in my bladder and just had the catheter out on Monday after 12 days. I was given instructions on how to remove it myself, which just involved snipping a piece that released the balloon that was holding the cath in place. It slid right out, no pain, and I was able to pee without any trouble.

I felt strangely free all that day. I kept looking around for my "bag" as I'd gotten very good at finding places to hook it.

The first thing I did was climb into my comfy yoga pants. I'd never appreciated pants as much as Monday.

It does feel different to urinate post-cath, not terribly uncomfortable, but still twinges and dribbles, like the insides just don't quite know what to do with themselves with all that new room. My uterus was large enough with fibroids to have indented my bladder and made me have to go all the time. That feeling is now gone and I really don't miss it.

With the cath, I noticed that when I felt pressure, like I needed to pee, it was often an angle that wasn't allowing complete flow down into the bag. I would get relief standing up and moving the tube to watch the air bubbles chase one another. There's not a lot to do in recovery in those first days, so it was an interesting distraction

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

c-sections can cause bladder issues, my dr opened me up because I had had 4 c-sections and he was concerned that the uterus may have been stuck to the bladder and just pulling the uterus out may have damaged the bladder. I am lucky he did this as they were very much stuck together with adhesions and it took him a long time to carefully seperate them

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

While having this cath in is not ideal, it definately helps to know that others have the same issues and that it wasnt something my doctor screwed up, just a negative side effect of the hysterectomy. My dr. did prescribe Phenazopyridine 200 mg. tablets for the first few days which acts as a anesthetic for the catheter so you dont feel as much pressure to pee. It has helped quite a bit, as does standing and shifting position. Good luck all, hopefully the time on the cath will pass quickly!

Re: Torn Bladder, catheter for 14 days, awful!

Ohh... I remember that! I had my cather in for eleven days after my hyster. It was terrible carrying it around all the time and very uncomfortable. Try laying on your side with a pillow inbetween your legs. It hurt me to sit straight up so i always just kinda lounged halfway between sitting and laying. Don't forget to clean it. Wipe the cather with just soap and water and wipe Away from your v-jay jay. You don't want to risk an infection. When I had mine removed my Dr deflated it and let me pull it out and my own pace. Didn't hurt at all and made me feel better doing it myself so you can ask them to let you do it. I had no problems peeing on my own afterwards or burning. Hang in there.
