Meal ideas

So my surgery is a little over a week away, any good ideas for meals that I can prepare now and freeze for after surgery? I have lasagna, chilli and vegetable beef soup already made and in the freezer!

Re: Meal ideas

Hi i go on the 9th. I have some soups ready, meat sauce for spaghetti, I need to make chili maybe tomorrow i'll do that. This is what's crazy, i have a freezer stocked with stuff and my husband things it's easier to do take out that go in the freezer take something out and heat it up. Heck he could take something out at night put in the refrigerator so it's less time in the microwave afterwards. I don't feel like eating take out all the time. I have my own stash of foods that are off limits to my family for after surgery when i'm not feeling like eating.

Re: Meal ideas

I freeze shepherd's pie..1 lb hamburger browned, drained mixed with one can tomato soup and half cup onions, Then put one can corn on top following by mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 until hot and bubbly. Freezes great tastes yummy.

Re: Meal ideas

Frozen chicken and fish portions are going in to,my freezer for a quick heat and eat with salad for the family. Also I have a slow cooker, and am hoping to make something magical and two meals with in the next day or so.

Frozen homemade chicken burgers are also versatile, as well as meatballs, so they can be used with salad, mash, rice or pasta.

Good luck, I am heading I just before you, so will be eagerly watching this post!

Warm and happy thoughts, Smoxy x

Re: Meal ideas

I've also made some desserts and muffins too! Most baked things freeze well. I figure some mornings eating a zucchini or banana nut muffin might be enough for me.

Re: Meal ideas

I know that we all want to take care of our loved ones, but we also have to remember that once in a while we have to let our loved ones take care of us. I would buy a bunch of stuff you can pop in the microwave and if they want something else...I would venture to say they would find a way. We have to allow ourselves to need help. I know its hard. LOL I told my husband I'm getting cleaning lady for 6 weeks!

Re: Meal ideas

Thanks for all the ideas ladies!! I made a big pot of goulash tonight and half is going to the freezer. I love the idea of shepherds pie and the muffins, I didn't even think about breakfast foods
My hubby works nights so for the first few days my mom will be here to help me with our 4 year old, dinner, keeping the house cleaned and taking care of me!! After that I just plan on letting him pick something from the freezer when he gets home in the mornings and then popping it in the oven (ours is double stacked so it's not low to the ground) before he gets up for work.
Good luck to all who have surgery coming up!! Is anyone else getting nervous? My nerves are going crazy already!!

Re: Meal ideas

Another is to brown some ground beef w/taco seasoning...freeze it and then hubby can have tacos, nachos or taco salad...The other is to cook up a few chicken breast....those can be for chicken ceasar salad, chicken tacos, chicken salad sandwiches, etc....
Just an idea that helped me post op....kind of a control freak when it comes to my family eating (no fast food for us)....make a chart of the next two weeks of whats for dinner that night....Saved my husband from trying to find something...it was all written down and he looked at the list each night took out next nights dinner to defrost. Worked liked a charm. That gave him more time to be with the kids and take care of me and what I needed. Just an idea to help someone. Hugs and good luck to all of you...Go slow and listen to your body....

Re: Meal ideas

I found that the first couple of weeks I didn't have a very big appetite. Since I was home alone during the day, I found it very helpful to have a supply of Campbells soup in the cupboard. A small bowl of soup and a few soda crackers was about all I felt up to eating for lunch. So stock in some quick, easy things like this for yourself.
