after surgury pump
Hi Ladies, It seems like the drug of choice for the after surgury pump is Morphine. I was wondering if anyone had asked for any other drug like maybe demerol instead, because of a bad reaction to morphine? Don't think I'm actually allergic to it but, it has given me sleepless nights with really bad nightmarish dreams and nausea when I used it in the past after c -section. Any input would be appreciated.

after surgury pump
Hi,
I started out with morphine in my PCA pump, but after it made me all night, the doctor switched it to Demerol. Unfortunately, the first time I pressed the button, I again, so I decided there was no way I was going to hit that button again!
The nurse gave me an injection of Torodol, which was just wonderful! You might check to see if they'll put that in your pump for you.
s,
Lisa

after surgury pump
I was given dilaudid after surgery.
I have a problem with most narcotics, they make me nervous and sleepless and found that problem with dilaudid as well (though it did relieve pain and didn't make me sick to my stomach).
Talk to your doctor and anesthesiologist about your tolerances for particular medications in the past and how you'd prefer to manage your pain during recovery.
I refused to continue the pain pump after the first day and just used ibuprofen during the day and the second night they gave me a shot of toradol (an NSAID) which I preferred, so talking it over with them will give you lots more options (because they'll have written the rx before you need the drug).
Take care.

after surgury pump
HI!
Apparently, I'm one of the few who had NO pump at all - injections of Dialudid for the first 24 hrs. post-op and then on to oral percocet and then extra strength ibuprofen by day 3. I actually did really well with the pain scene. Doctor offered me an RX for percocet to come home and told me to call if I needed it but I was ok.
Demerol makes me TREMENDOUSLY sick - instant "barfing" reaction. I made sure that was on my chart, let me tell you. I had morphine after my c-section baby and after the D/C and did well with that also.
Make sure you ask the questions and tell about your reactions. Will all help in the end to take care of you!
Blessings to you!

after surgury pump
Hi Cindy,
I had a vag hyst (took everything but ovaries) on Jan. 3, and had general anesthesia with mega-doses of anti-nausea meds beforehand to ease my tummy problems. No problem with all that.
Then I had demerol in the pump for the first evening/night. I hated the way it made me feel (really loopy when awake, then nightmares and sleeping only in fits and starts), so asked for toradol, which I learned about from the good sisters here on HS. (THANKS, ladies!!!) The toradol was just the ticket for me, and I was able to come home about 28 hours after surgery. Toradol is a strong anti-inflammatory, so it helps with pain, swelly-belly AND the healing process. I still have a few pills left that I take only once or twice a day now (9 days post-op). Hope this helps you make your decisions a little more easily --- good luck!
Lots of s from

after surgury pump
Hi
I had a TAH almost 3 years ago. I did have morphine in my pump. I don't have a problem with it, although I was pretty loopy from it, then when it was removed I had oral Percocet and I was about as equally loopy.
My sister had a TAH 4 weeks ago and had Toradol intravenously, not via a pump. She was alert and feeling better really quickly, I was amazed. It could be a combination of the different narcotic and she is very physically active that made the difference in our immediate post op period.
Best wishes!

I have taken Stadol , Diladid<sp> and Demerol all work well.I'm sure there are alot out there I haven't even heard of...lol Guess if the first one doesn't work I can always ask them for something else. Thanks again Ladies.

I have also had demoral in past surgries but I had the morphine pump and I would wake up in pain press the button and no pain. But during the first night they took me off the pump because the morphine was making my heart race not sure what they gave me
for pain after that.

after surgury pump
I'm four days post op now and was one of the ones who didn't have a pump and wanted one. Apparently what they gave me in recovery made my blood pressure drop to 40's over 20's something. I have no clear recollection of this but about 6 hours afterwards and a lot of intense pain, I finally got a combination of demerol and phenergan (sp?) and it made me sleep, sleep, sleep. It also made my vitals stabilize. Doing much better today, only on Ibuprofen for pain now.

I have a reaction to Morphine so my last Laparotomy they gave me a demorol pump with phenergan to keep down the nausea. Morphine makes my head feel like it's going to explode because it's a potent vasodilator which means it dilates the blood vessels, causes your blood pressure to drop as well. Demerol works really well for me so that's what they gave me. Everything works differently for different women so just talk to your dr and to the anesthesiologist and they will work with you to keep you comfortable.
Best wishes.
