5 days post hysterectomy yeast infection?

Had my mostly laproscopic hysterectomy on the 19th. Have one slightly larger incision due to fibroids. Anyone know if getting a yeast infection post-surgery is normal? I am not currently takng antibiotics, but I know they gave me some through IV at hospital. Thx.

Re: Post-surgery yeast infection?

Hi, welcome! Yeast infection can occur.. Not everyone will get a yeast infection despite given the antibiotic injection during surgery.

Anytime we take antibiotics, we should eat yogurt or kefir. A probiotic helps too. Watch out for processed foods. Try to omit sweets, opt for fruit instead..

Dryness from reduced estrogen can cause an irritation in the vagina & that too can be confused w a yeast infection...Keep any incisions clean & dry bc yeast can occur around incision sites. I would shower, dry off w a blow dryer. Air out incisions, then place a pad to wick any potential discharge or perspiration. Id wear a tank top, then my ab binder, to hold everything in place. clothes over binder.

Re: 5 days post hysterectomy yeast infection?

Getting a yeast infection post-op isn't a given, but it does happen. I was prescribed anti-biotics (zPac), and never got one. You can feel dryness without having a yeast infection, itchiness can be a sign, but the main sign is a discharge that resembles cottage cheese combined with the itching and irritation.

If you suspect you have a yeast infection, don't make assumptions and try to treat yourself with OTC products. Give your doc a call. You want the right treatment for the right problem, and so soon after surgery, a doc's guidance is best.
