will i come home with a catheder

I'm having a TVH and a bladder sling. I will be in two nights, providing all goes well. What are the chances that I'll come home with a catheder?

Hi MemawB,
The only way I know of that a person comes home with a cathader is that they are having trouble urinating. For instance the requirements for going home is usually able to move bowels and or pass gas and urinate, if you are having trouble doing the pee thing the cathader stays in and if for instance insurance doesn't pay for many days in the hospital you would go home with the cath. That, of course, is just one example of why you may go home with a cath.
You will do fine. I will be thinking about you.

Hi, I think that sometimes this is a question that is determined "on the spot" as needed. Sometimes circumstances happen that may require decisions like that.

I think that is a question that you should ask your dr. He/she should be able to give you an idea of what to expect.

I'm sending lots of good wishes that all goes well for you.

yep like deb said that is how it was explained to me too. You will only go home with it if you are still not urinating good yet.

I had a TVH & bladder sling & had to come home from the castle with a cath. My doc said that it's about 50/50 the odds of coming home with a cath. He said that some doctors don't even remove the cath until 1 week post op...but that he always likes to give his patients the "opportunity" to pee on their own. I wasn't able to & so had the cath in for about 1 week.

It really wasn't as bad as I had imagined & it was very nice to be able to drink all that I wanted & not have to race to the bathroom to pee. Also - I think having the cath made my DH more compassionate towards me & he brought me breakfast in bed every morning & really babied me. It was great to be waited on for a change.

If you do end up coming home with a cath make sure that you get a prescription for pyridium. A cath has a tendency to irritate the bladder & cause bladder spasms. If you take the pyridium it will help with the spasms & you'll be ALOT more comfy.

Don't let thoughts of coming home with a cath scare you like they did me. I almost didn't have the bladder sling done because I was so terrified but I'm VERY glad that I had the surgery done. I can now pee just great & I can sneeze w/out any "uh-oh's". It's wonderful!!!!!!!
