so confused! can't wait for pre-op on Monday!

I'm so confused on my surgery..maybe I should have taken someone with me to my last appointment.

The surgeon said he will go in first through an incision through my belly button so he can see with a camera any other reason that may be giving me an enlarged uterus..from there he said the rest of the surgery will be done vaginally.

so is that an LAVH? and does that mean the cervix will be removed?
I'm sure he said everything would be gone except my ovaries..and not I'm having the "what did he say" questions.

it doesn't sound like the pre-op is with the surgeon, so can they answer this question at that appointment? Or should I just go talk to my family dr as he has all the info as well??

Re: so confused! can't wait for pre-op on Monday!

Howdy,

My pre-op on the 13th is 2 parts--first, meeting with the surgeon for last minute questions/concerns/paperwork. 2nd part--tests at hospital (blood, ekg, etc.) and meeting with anesthesiology staff.

So, my suggestion is that if you don't have another meeting with the surgeon, write down your questions and call the office for at least a phone consult. It is absolutely essential you get all your questions answered to help you feel at ease with the surgery-and to know what to expect. If he or she refuses to talk to you (either by phone or a pre-op visit), I'd say that is a bad sign. Definitely take someone with you to your pre-op--I have a page of questions (half for doctor, half for hospital), and DH has a copy, too, in case I forget something.

Good luck, and I hope all goes great for you!

Re: so confused! can't wait for pre-op on Monday!

Deanie - that sounds like the surgery I'm having. A single port lap assisted vaginal hyst. It's called SILS or LESS even though everything is removed vaginally. I wish they had an abbreviation on here specifically for that procedure - like SILAVH or SILS/VH.

I would also advise calling the office to get your questions answered - or ask if the doc will see you at pre-op appt. I went in for my first appt with my SO and a 2 page list of questions - which I took the time to write down the answers to during the appt!

haha..that would be me!

I never realized there were so many types of hysterectomies..and thought I had it all figured out. And the more I read, the more I have questions.
But I'm going to ask..then I will know completely what's going on.

Re: so confused! can't wait for pre-op on Monday!

Hey Deanie,

I used to think all hysterectomies were the same, and now I know better. My preop appointment will be with my internist, not the gynecologist, so I don't know whether he would be able to answer all of my questions. Perhaps calling the gynecologist's office would be helpful with those questions you're writing down.

Good luck with your appointment, and if you can bring someone, all the better. Not only will they help you remember things, they'll be there for some good ol' social support. Who among us could use a little of that these days?

Hugs,
