Yearly Exam - 7 months after Vaginal Hysterectomy

Good morning,

Yesterday I went to the doctor for my yearly and aside from my post op visit following surgery, this was my first visit since. I had a vaginal hysterectomy with my cervix removed December 9, 2015. My ovaries are intact. I explained to my doctor that the last few weeks following sex I was bleeding. Minimal to no pain but still bleeding. Following her exam, she noted that I polyps on my vaginal cuff which she stated were the reason for the bleeding. She also advised them to be removed. Now, the discussion that followed I believe included these were to be tested and there looked like there was abnormal healing of the vaginal cuff or a tear. It would appear in order to fix this, I will need a D & C or a D & C like procedure.

Of course. I researched. Please share some insight on this and possible ease my anxiety a little. Is this common? Is a polyp similar to a fibroid? Removal methods? vaginal cuff tear 7 months later? My post opp visit in Jan was fine Is the tearing from sex?

Please help...Worried in the East

Re: Yearly Exam - 7 months after Vaginal Hysterectomy

Hello, its an over growth of cells, on uterine lining or in your case, vaginal cuff...Did you have endometriosis? Now I didnt have this exact procedure that your Dr wants to do, but Ive had a D & C. A hysteroscope is used, the cavity (uterus) is filled w a gas to see the area well. (Ask your Dr if doing that). Then the dr scrapes & or uses a laser or scissors to remove polyps.

My Dr took a biopsy of a fibroid, scraped the uterine lining & between the light sedation & that procedure, it took 45 minutes. I did have cramps & was tired the rest of the day. I got a pathology report in 2 weeks.

Call your Drs office again to ask specific questions that youd like answered 1st..Type of sedation? How long procedure? What method to remove polyp? What do you suspect caused polyps? Recovery? Tell your Dr that you are concerned & would appreciate insight about this vs waiting. She may just tell you that its just all precautionary measures & not alarming. Update us when you hear.

Re: Yearly Exam - 7 months after Vaginal Hysterectomy

Fibroids are composed of muscular tissue, similar to the myometrial layer of the uterus. Endometrial polyps are composed of the same kind of tissue as the endometrial layer of the uterus. The good news: polyps are easier to remove!

My hysterectomy was for endometrial cancer. Nine months after surgery, I had some light bleeding that lasted less than 24 hours. It turned out that there was a very small polyp (maybe 5 mm long) on my vaginal cuff. My gyn onc yanked it out on the spot! Ouch!

Polyps can be either benign or malignant. Mine turned out to be malignant - my cancer had recurred. But keep in mind that my original surgery was for cancer, which I take it yours wasn't. Your risk is lower than mine was.

I suspect that by "like a D&C," your doc meant that the removal of the polyps would be done under twilight sedation and would only involve removing endometrial-like tissue rather than cutting into muscular tissue (which would be a more serious surgery). The difference from a D&C would be that since all the action is happening at your vaginal cuff, the doc would actually be able to see what she was doing with sending a miniaturized camera into your uterus. This can only be a plus. :-)

Re: Yearly Exam - 7 months after Vaginal Hysterectomy

I agree with SurprisedinNB, It wouldnt be as involved procedure if uterus is removed & using the hysterscopy, its confined to a smaller area...polyps can be benign or malignant. Most cases they are benign. If your hysterectomy wasnt for cancer, then, yes, I agree, your chances of it being cancerous would be low. Polyps, Its the same thing that can occur in the colon. (colonoscopy, they remove polyps too during that procedure). I had my D & C in close proximity to a colonoscooy & endoscopy. I was having problems due to the fibroids causing an array of digestive upset. I was nervous being sent for 3 procedures. So I was more worried about having D&C done than hysterectomy due to Drs wanting to check 3 areas!!

I had my D & C so my Dr did a biopsy of fibroid & scrape uterine lining. They send all that to pathology to get a report to determine if theres any sign of pre-cancer or cancer. Everything was benign.. Im sure all will be fine. Its usually the waiting game w anticipation of a procedure that gets us worked up. Update us 🌹🌷

Re: Yearly Exam - 7 months after Vaginal Hysterectomy

Good morning,

Yes I had endometriosis prior to the hysterectomy, I am awaiting an appointment with my Dr. and already have a full list of questions.

Thank you all for your feedback. SurprisedinNB are they reoccurring such as in the colon? I was scoped in every which direction prior to the hysterectomy too and I just wonder if there is anything I can do to prevent polyp growth. Like a change in my diet?

Whether or not your polyps are going to recur would have a lot to do with why they grew in the first place. Mine grew because the cells were cancerous. I sure hope it doesn't recur! *grin*

I'd suggest that after you have your polyps removed and analyzed by the pathology lab, you should talk to your doc about what caused them to grow and if there's anything you can do to prevent future polyps.
