Have your appendix removed or not?

I am thinking about having my appendix removed when I have my hysterectomy. I just wanted to get some other ladies input! My sister, "chatpatty" is having her TAH BSO tomorrow and she is getting her appendix removed. I'm just thinking knowing my luck, I'll be recovering from surgery and I'll have an appendicitis attack!! Thank you ladies for your continued support!

Have your appendix removed or not?

Has your MD suggested that they do this? Can they do it via an LAVH? Is there a particular reason that your sister is having hers removed? My experience has been that, depending on the MD, some will take an appendix when doing a TAH to make tings easier in the future for other MDs. The idea used to be that if you are ill and can't answer questions about your medical history and they see a scar on your abdomen, some MDs may assume that you have already had your appendix taken out and therefore would rule it out as a source of whatever your problem may be. I am not sure how widely this view is still held. If you are very concerned about this you can mention it your MD, just be aware that it may not be possible with an LAVH. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Talk to your doctor about this before the surgery. I sure wish I had. I had some post-op complications that make me a bad candidate for more abdominal surgeries. My doctor and I both wish she had taken mine out, although she did say mine was healthy. Wishing all the best for in the future.
