Scheduling my surgery today...excited and nervous. What are the must have items?
By the end of the day today, I will have a date and time for my da vinci total hysterectomy and BSO. I am excited and nervous!!! Excited that my life will not be planned around my uterus. Excited that the pain will be better. Nervous about surgical menopause because my doc says no hormones for 6 months. Nervous about surgery. I know it is not all sunshine and rainbows but gauging by the comments on this site, most people would gladly take the problems post hysterectomy over the pre hysterectomy problems.

Re: Scheduling my surgery today...excited and nervous
This made me think back to scheduling my surgery. I wanted to do it in mid may, after some visitors left and after jury duty on May 7. The day I was going to call, I got an email from an old friend in Brazil that she was coming to visit on May 26-June 1. So I had to go for June 5 instead, which actually probably was better because then it was warm enough to wear sundresses every day after my surgery instead of pants :-)
I think that you are going to be happy with your decision, my recovery was uneventful, and immediately I felt so much better than before surgery. I had a huge fibroid that was putting pressure on everything, and I was nauseous the week before my period and had severe cramps the week of my period. I always felt full to the point of bursting even after eating something small and had pretty severe reflux. I felt so good after my surgery, I went to the supermarket with my husband a couple of days after and bought up everything in sight. Suddenly everything was appetizing. I gave myself 2 weeks to eat whatever, and am now trying to get back to eating healthier or I will weigh 600 lbs. :-) Good luck to you!

Scheduling my surgery today...excited and nervous. What are the must have items?
So it is official...Sept 5th at 0730. I have a little over a month to prepare. Any must have items or suggestions are welcome.
I am hoping for a speedy recovery but am willing to take off whatever time I need to heal.
I am in decent cardiovascular shape but am overweight. I run 5-6 days a week and finished a half marathon last week. I probably need to do more core strengthening exercises prior to surgery. I read that improving your fitness level helps.
What are the best type of outfits to wear after? Yoga pants? Dresses? Should I get a binder? How much walking should I plan on doing once I get home?

Hi ouidamichelle -
You will need loose fitting clothes. Yoga pants, sweat pants, loose dresses all work. A binder is a personal decision - I never had one and did not feel I needed one. Some women love them.
For walking, you should plan on several frequent, but brief, walks per day. It really helps the healing process. Talk to your doctor about strengthening your core before your surgery, and any dos or don'ts.
Here is an article on Preparing for Hysterectomy Recovery | What Will I Need?. Be sure to check out the related titles as well (right hand side of the article).
Hope these help!

I let the insurance issue slip up on me (tho I'm not scheduled till 8/19). Just check out your coverage, have the $ worries out of the way. Wish I was as dedicated to exercise as it seems you are, I've just been precooking meals instead! Best of luck

Hi Ouidamichelle
Welcome to the website. You are going to love having all the sisters to talk to and share with during this experience. It was a life saver for me. I had about a month to read on the site before my surgery and It really helped me be ready. My surgery was similar to yours and although I did use my binder in the hospital and the first week, after that it was more trouble than needed. I think it really depends on the type of surgery and how much has to be done inside. They gave me one at the hospital so you might ask your Dr or at your pre-op in the hospital.
Working on core strength could be a good idea but does sound like you are already in great shape? I lost weight the first 2 weeks because didn't feel very hungry. But then promptly gained it and a little more back when the appetite kicked back in but was not yet very active because of fatigue. So if this is a concern of yours you might want to think about how best you should plan, purchase healthy foods, and manage your intake after surgery to meet your needs. I wish I had planned better in this area.
Hope all goes well for you.
Hugs,
Anndy
