Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
I'm day 4 post op. Just got up for about 45 minutes and I am wiped out. Is that normal? I thought I should be moving around a lot more. My biggest complaint is the episiotomy. That hurts! I'd like to sit on the couch downstairs, but I feel like I need a donut to sit on. I wrote out a few cards, folded a little bit of laundry, walked a bit outside and now I'm back in bed.
Just wondering if this much time in bed is normal or if I should be pushing myself more.
Also I still haven't had a bm. Should I be concerned? I don't feel like I need to go, but I've had food so I know something will need to come out. should I drink some prune juice now or wait till I feel the need to go?

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
You're still really early in recovery - at 4 days I was in bed all day except for my random laps around the house to keep walking. You should get a donut to sit on - you'll get tired of laying all the time. I would go from couch to bed all day. I don't think you need to push yourself at day 4 - just keep walking so you don't have any other problems (blood clots, pneumonia, etc). As for the BM, you should get on that before it becomes a real mess. I take Miralax every other day and it works great. Others use Colace or warm prune juice (ugh). You def want to get that out before it becomes painful...
Take care

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
Hi,
I agree with the previous poster. The first week is tough so it's definitely normal to be tired. I went for my first walk around the block at day 5 and needed a nap.
I was taking colace daily. I drank a cocktail I read about here of apple juice prune juice and ginger ale. I also tried warming straight prune juice.
Hang in there!

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
Hi NicinNC! Yes, you are very early in your recovery and what you are feeling is normal! The first week I was pretty much in bed with getting up to use the bathroom. End of week one, I was taking short laps in my bedroom. Week 2, I was then taking laps in my house and very short walks outside.
And yes, you will feel tired! Allow yourself to sleep so you can heal. I would recommend taking Miralex and gasx as that is what I took which helped in the BM dept. also increasing your fiber and drinking lots of water.
You will get better!!!! I'm on my 4th week and just completed a 4.20 mile walk...so trust me! You will get there!!!

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
Definitely, you want to get your bowels moving. I had my LAVH on 9/11/12 and didn't move my bowels until 2 days later---and it didn't feel good. I am a nurse and knew that I could not let it go too long.
Your first inclination is that it is going to hurt to have your first BM, which it will, but you'll feel so much better. My doctor suggested Colace (over-the counter med) and I found weak tea and warm water also helped.
Best of luck with your recovery.

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
Yes, it's normal. 45 minutes is a long time at 4 days. When I got up to go to the bathroom, and I'd do a few laps around the house, and it was back to the recliner. That was my routine the first week.
Take it easy. Rest, rest, rest.
As for the bm, I found glycerine suppositories to be the answer. Not to be gross, but they melt, and it helps things sort of slide right out. I had no pain.
hugs,

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
thanks everyone! I'm taking Colace twice a day. I also just drank a can of warm prune juice (gag). I KNOW that will get things moving because the last time I drank prune juice for constipation, I had an all out blowout. My tummy is already making gurgling noises.
You have no clue how awful I feel just laying around. My dh is out cutting the grass and I would LOVE to be out there doing that. Don't worry, I won't. I'm not that crazy. I did go outside again and it felt so good to get some sunshine on my face.

The sunshine will help tremendously! And btw, I called the nurse at two weeks and asked what I should be doing (because I felt like I should be doing more) . She said "nothing"....
Go easy on yourself. Don't feel guilty.

NicInNC, you are definitely normal! The first couple of weeks I did nothing but sleep and rest. I don't think you should push yourself at this point. You are still early in the process. Your body needs this down time to heal. Good luck and hugs!

Re: Is it normal to be spending this much time in bed?
Thaks for posting this answer. I am 8 days post op and feel horribly guilty about doing nothing most of the time. I do little laps around the house and very small late day walk with my mum, and other than that I am feeling like a lazy bum. I am a nurse and just not used to sitting still and not feeling productive! It's crazy! I would tell anybody else to take it easy but I guess I am just stubborn ( and bored). I vow from here on to be little kinder to myself this week! I should know better....my shower today wiped me out but it was sooooo worth it and I figured out how to shave my legs without bending at the waist, i usually do it in the tub but that is a no no right now)
