Cystocele Repair & Urethral Sling OUTPATIENT?

I was elated when the phone rang and it was my dr's office calling with my surgery schedule. But now I am just confused. I have to have a cystocele repair and a urethral sling. Everything I read and everyone I talked to said that the surgery was not minor, and I would be in the hospital for 3-5 days. The scheduler at my Uro's office said that my surgery was to be OUTPATIENT. Has anyone heard of this before? Shouldnt I be in the hospital at least a couple of days ?

Cystocele Repair & Urethral Sling OUTPATIENT?

I had cystocele repair, urethral sling and TVT in Nov. of last year. I had to stay only one night. I had a cath in until the morning to give my bladder a rest. The nurse removed it in the morning. I had to pass the pee test. (peeing on my own and not leaving much in my bladder) Fortunately, I passed. The surgery was really not bad. I went back to work part-time in 4 weeks and full-time at 6 weeks. You just need to follow the drs instructions and don't lift.

Cystocele Repair & Urethral Sling OUTPATIENT?

After my first cystocele and rectocele repair failed I was referred to a Uro/Gyn. I did not like her very much but she came highly recommended by my Gyn who had told me for this surgery I would be in the hospital overnight. The Uro/Gyn told me it could be done as an outpatient but my Gyn had told her he wanted me to stay overnight because I had complications with previous surgeries. The day before the surgery the Uro/Gyn called me to confirm the surgery, make sure I was feeling well and to tell me there was a bed shortage and she would be sending me home after the surgery. I called my Gyn because I was so anxious about this and we ended up cancelling the surgery and rescheduling with a different Uro/Gyn at another hospital who does keep his patient's overnight following prolapse surgery.
So I guess in all reality it is possible to have this done as an outpatient but I was very happy to be able to have the nursing staff monitor pain meds and manage my care. As it turned out I did have some problems post-op and would probably have ended up readmitted if I had been discharged right after the surgery.

Cystocele Repair & Urethral Sling OUTPATIENT?

I had my sphincter repaired years ago as an outpatient procedure, I was in so much pain and my blood pressure was really low, so I was admitted anyway.
I do know that it is very common to have the TVT done as an outpatient procedure, maybe your doctor thinks that your cystocele repair isn't going to be a really invasive repair. Talk to your doctor about it. I do know that my doctor wanted to use the new Prolift mesh which is minimally invasive - a less than an hour procedure. Please ask your doctor what procedure is going to be used and make sure you are comfortable with the risks. Good Luck with your repair I am hoping to have a cystocele, rectocele repair (with dissolveable mesh) sometime this fall too.
