all most a year after hyst
Can anyone tell me if your bowels could be damaged after a hysterectomy. I have had every test known to man and they cant find nothing wrong but sense September of last year I have not been able to move my bowels right I have tried every laxative on the market and nothing is working. So they are sending me to a nerve doctor to see if there is nerve damage Is this possible from a (abdomen)hysterectomy.
thank you Lynn

Couch Potato -
I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue.
Unfortunately nerve damage is a possible complication of a hysterectomy. In most instances the nerves regenerate and it can take a long time as nerves grow slowly.
Sending you and hope you get an answer.

Re: all most a year after hyst
Lynne,
I am so sorry that you are having problems. Boy do I ever sympathize. I have had problems ever since my surgery but do have Crohn's and IBD. I also have had tests galore with no answer. I am now going to a clinic about nine hours from my house to be seen by the experts in this field. I hope you get answers. All I can say is keep pushing because there is an answer somewhere for your problems. I hope the nerve doctor can figure this out. Sending lots of

Re: all most a year after hyst
Hi zenyatta 5
Well went to the neurologist she said to take neurontin. I'm just afraid it's going to make it worse not being able to go to the bathroom. She said it doesn't cause constipation it causes diaherra so I don't know what to think. She did say I have peripheral neupathy. She did an MRI of tail bone area and pelvis and of course the didn't see anything she just said I have a little bit of fluid in there and a little inflamed but she said it was from the hysterectomy still heeling. How can heeling take a year.
You mentioned you are seeing a doctor what are they telling you?
Thanks Lynn

Re: all most a year after hyst
Lynn,
My docs are totally puzzled by what is happening to me. They do know I have IC and are thinking that I may have a combination of a IC flare, IBS flare and Crohn's flare all happening at once. That is why I am going to a specialist.
Have you seen a gi doc for his opinion of this? As my case shows, you can have more than one problem at the same time. And believe me, they can all add up to being a HUGE problem.
Probably what the neurologist was trying to say was that if there was any damage to nerves it can take a long time to heal. That could be part of the problem. It is also possible for the messages going back and forth from your body to your brain and back could also be affected. I have been on Neurontin and it didn't cause any problems with constipation. It works a little differently than do pain medicines.
Hope you get some relief soon. Sending lots of

HI zenyatta5
Yes I have seen a GI and they did nothing for me. I'm also worried about the meds putting weight on the side effects say weight gain. I have been through alot in the past two years had breast cancer had to do chemo than four months later had to go in for an emergency hysterectomy cause I was bleeding so bad and know this I don't want to gain weight on top of it.

Re: all most a year after hyst
Try taking magnesium supplements and see if that helps. I have noticed they help a great deal, but I can't speak to the nerve damage. Good luck!

Re: all most a year after hyst
I totally understand about the weight gain. I had been put on steroids for two and a half weeks (the worst two weeks of my life) and gained five pounds in four days. To say I was ticked would be an understatement. Did the gi doc suggest anything? I would have to say that I am not "normal" but it is tolerable. I have to take fiber supplements every day and also have to take Miralax at least two to three times a week. I have learned to live with this and know what helps. Hopefully your doc can help with this and find something that would help. Sending hugs and best wishes.

Re: all most a year after hyst
Unfortunately, healing from this major surgery take 9 months to a year... for some even longer.

Re: all most a year after hyst
I agree about long healing times. I am also almost a year out and still trying to recover. This has been a much longer process than I first thought. I am one of those slow healers that takes a long time.
