Pain management at day one home

Hi there! While i've been a member for some time and replied to a few posts, this is my very first so please bare with me!

So, i just got home today after spending one night at the hospital. I had a total lapo hyster with cervix and both ovaries removed. I also had severe fibrosis on left side wall and ureter (had kidney stones in March...eek) This was my fourth (lots of endo, fibroids , adhesions) and lets surely hope my last surgery! What more could they take? This was the first time I spent the night..... You'd think i'd be a 'pro',sadly, with pain and surgery but this one is/was different both physically and emotionally.

My question is how are women out there managing the initial discomfort? I have a prescription for Dilaudid (hydromorphone) 2mg. Oxycodone did not work well for me. At the hospital i took 2 tabs every 4 hours with tylenol every 8 hours (i can't take ibuprofen). Since being home I've cut it in half.... 1 tab every 4 hours. I'm a little afraid of constipation, which i'm prone to. Are there other 'tricks' out there that have worked? I'm using an ice pack and getting up to walk around the house every 3 hours or so. Any advice would surely be warmly welcomed!!! Thank you for this wonderfully supportive site!

Re: Pain management at day one home

Take your meds so you don't feel pain. Take stool softeners if allowed by your dr. Eat fiber. I took Percocet for the first 4 days. After that no other meds.
Hugs and healing!

Re: Pain management at day one home

You might want to try a heating pad and alternate it with the ice, or even use it on your back if it is achy. Try to keep your mind occupied. I watched a lot of movies, explored every corner and forum on this site, and read a lot. Getting up and walking around, just around the rooms in your house every hour or two may help. Just remember to take it easy.

Re: Pain management at day one home

I didnt cut my prescription until it my pain lessened. I felt not being in pain was a way to better healing. I was off the narcotics by about a week or so but i did piggyback them at first with the IB600 so i wouldnt have too much pain or swelling. I also played video games which def are distracting lol. Hope you feel better soon!
