oh! very!(ovary) what after?

Hi ya,
All you very helpful ladies, if I did maage to keep my ovaries what is the likelyhood of having any problems with them, just trying to get my head straight, currently am down to have them out but I am going to speak with the surgeon and trust his opinion, tha tif bad they come out otherwise shall ask to leave them. My Dh also says may be wise to save them and it was he that posed this question bless his cotton socks !

luv to everyone.

I kept my ovaries and on the whole am glad I did. I figure I can always have them removed later if need be, but once they are out there is no "re-installation".

This is a highly individual decision and is best made on a case by case situation with your doctor.

Best wishes to you!

One thing to keep in mind is that without ovaries you go into surgical menopause -- and depending on your age it could mean Hormone Replacement therapy.

If they are healthy I think they will leave them -- if they are not then they take them.

Do some research on HRT to see what the risks are. Then make a list of questions to ask your DR.

Good luck.

I am personally doing everything I can to save mine, only if there are severe problems will my doctor take them out. I figure the hyst alone will be enough loss for one surgery and I sure do love my natural hormones!!

I am 46. I had no endometriosis or any family history of ovarian cancer. I'd never had an abdominal surgery before, so there were no adhesions. My doc and I agreed that if they were healthy looking, they would stay.

They stayed. They were shocked for about a month, I had night sweats the next week that should have been a period. The next month no symptoms. I believe they're functioning just fine now - no loss of libido or hair or anything.

My doc says I should get about 5 more years' "Mileage" out of them, based on my mother's age of menopause. By then I hope that the controversy over Hormone Replacement will have been settled, and we'll know if that's a reasonable thing to do or not. (I keep seeing Fried Green Tomatoes in my head and hearing Jessica Tandy saying "Just how many of them horror-moans you takin', anyways??")

Talk to your doc about your personal risks/benefits of the options, to take or not to take. Make the best informed decision you can, based on your personal facts.

Best wishes to you for an uncomplicated surgery, a comfy recovery and future great health!

Tiniegil.

I kept my ovaries also. I was 4-5 years out from menopause and I wanted to go through it naturally, if possible.

My Dr. and I agreed he would do a "looky-loo" on my ovaries while I was in surgery, and if anything appeared abnormal, he would remove them. I have read on some forums where Hyster Sisters feel uncomfortable with letting the Dr. make the final word on that. I trusted my Dr. and I felt he would make the best decision for me. He did.

You might want to check with your female family history. Fibroids run in the females in my family but ovarian cancer does not. So...that helped with my decision too.

Good Luck. You will make the right choice for yourself.

I was going to keep mine but when the doctor got in he discovered that my left ovary was a mess. So now all I have is the right one but I'm very glad I was able to keep it.

From what my doctor told me, he said going into menopause and being put into menopause is like night and day. He said if you can do it naturally it's a lot easier!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all you replies, I am certainly going to follow this through with the surgeon, and hope to keep ovaries, the HRT bit still makes me , so hopefully won't have to have it.

to everyone
