2 days post hysterectomy: trouble urinating

I had a vaginal hysterectomy on Tuesday 16th June , they took the catheter out yesterday Thursday 18th of June. Since taking it out I haven't been able to wee yet , the have used the catheter a few times yesterday and recatheterised me over night. I have tried to wee again today with no luck and they are talking about teaching me to catheterise myself so I can go home. If anyone has some helpful tips I would be extremely grateful

Re: No catheter

Some tips are:
  • Make sure you're warm while on the toilet (wear a robe or wrap a blanket around your shoulders)
  • Run the faucet in the sink slowly so it trickles
  • Dangle your fingers in the trickling water
  • Gently blow through a straw while you try to pee
  • Close your eyes, relax your pelvic floor and visualize your urethra opening and urine passing through
I wish you the best of luck and hope you don't need to go home and self-cath!

Re: 2 days post hysterectomy: trouble urinating

I had a similar thing. I know this sounds gross but I found having a shower and running it over the vulva helped, it was a battle like sitting on the toilet for ever and my bladder didn't want to let go. I found it easier in the shower it has been slowly getting better

I couldn't go either sitting, but finally figured out later in the day it would come out if I stood over the toilet instead of sitting. Very painful, but that helped. The nurses also told me about the water running to help too.
