Am I out of my mind for wanting a Hysterectomy?

No, I do not think your crazy for wanting to be out of pain. Or for being sick and tired of long, heavy periods. Or for wanting to live a normal life that does not revolve around menstruation.
But are you positive you understand the risks and ramifications of having a hysterectomy? Have you investigated your options? Have you tried BC or lupro?
When they say recovery is 4-6 weeks that is initial recovery time. Many women feel great by that time but many others do not. Many women say it takes much longer to fully recover.
Only you know what is best for you. You can only make the best decision if you have all the needed information. Research the risks and benefits of all your options. When you know a hysterectomy is the only right option you will know it.
Good luck with everything

Am I out of my mind for wanting a Hysterectomy?

PLEASE Read a ton. A hysterectomy may provide a whole new set of issues. Read the posts on weight gain and loss of sexual desire among others. I was ' given ' a TAH against my wishes ( went in for removal of an ovarian cyst ) and I do not know who I am anymore. I take NHRT but it can never be the same as the real thing. Research your options.

Am I out of my mind for wanting a Hysterectomy?

I echo what everyone else has said but I also want to add my input. I had everything removed. My body feels great, I lost weight and it moves great HA. However the trade off is that I have no sexual desire. Now that may seem like a small word however with no sexual desire other problems follow. If I think back to all the pain that I was in prior to my hysto I would have researched a ton more. I cant take hormones or NRTs so I rely on soy which keeps my hot flashes and night sweats at bay. The trade off wasnt worth it because although I had incredible amounts of pain 2 weeks a month I was a woman the other two. I am just an empty shell now. But I feel good physically.

I totally understand what you are going through and I have come to the same conclusion - there is no other option for me. Ablations dont' seem to be a permanent solution and most end up with a hysterectomy anyway... but for sure, research research research! Try to keep at least one ovary for hormones. From what I've read I think that would be better.

Gina
You are not crazy. Your story sounds like mine, however I became anemic so quickly I fainted and had to have an emerg. hyster - even though I was planning to have one in the fall most likely. I needed FOUR pints of blood to get me back to normal and stabalize me for surgery. I'm on day 9 of my post op and feel really good. So glad to be done with the bleeding and clotting - it was like I could never imagine the size of clots I had. I know once I recover I will be feeling better than ever. I think it's good you are being pro-active. I was trying to pretend it would go away - however it didn't and it made it a bit scary in the process. My poor husband - he had to deal with me fainting then trying to play it off like I was fine. Obviously I was not. Good luck!

Am I out of my mind for wanting a Hysterectomy?

I don't think you're crazy at all.
I went to a new Gyn in December (hadn't been for several years due to moving to a new state and being generally annoyed with doctors from previous problems - long story) and basically the first thing I said to her was "I'm here to try and convince you I need a hysterectomy!" It didn't take much convincing as I had 9 day periods every 25 or so days, major pain, hard bleeding, clots, confined to my house for days type periods. I'm 40 and my boys are adopted - no bio kids for me and I wouldn't want another kid at this point even if it were possible.
I had my hyst. 2 weeks ago and am feeling great! Now that I won't have those horrible periods anymore I'm just wondering -- what am I going to do with all this time I'm going to have on my hands?? Ha!
Hope it all works out for you! Let us know what you and your doctors decide.

Re: Am I out of my mind for wanting a Hysterctomy?

I don't think your out of your mind. I too have been feeling like I am leaning towards a hysterectomy.
I have been terrified out of my mind worrying and waiting for lab results to come back to give me the "answers" to the extrememly long and heavy periods, the abnormal bleeding. I am 27, we have 3 little ones and we are done adding to our family.
I feel like these parts are doing nothing but causing me worry, stress and heartache, to me and my loved ones. I just feel like "get them out" lets get rid of the problem at it's source.

Hi Gina,

Your post really hit home with me. You certainly are NOT crazy for wanting a hysterectomy. Although I have never had one myself, I plan to get a second opinion and see if this option is the best for me. I know a few ladies suggest Lupron but Lupron is tough. The side effects sound horrific. My old OB-GYN said I should consider it so I got second opinion and was put on Depo Provera by my new OB-GYN (who is also a endo specialist). The Depo shot was GREAT for pain but the side effects are.. annoying and terrifying to say the least. But, everyone is different so Depo might be something worth discussing with your doctor. I am no longer on Depo because it gave me chronic, daily migraines so I need to goto a headache clinic for treatment.

I suggest getting a second opinion. I understand how you feel. Why keep an organ inside if its doing more harm then good and IF you don't want kids. It most definitely is an option to consider. I'm in the same boat and I'm only 24.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision. You certainly are not alone when it comes to this heart wrenching decision.

Well I'm a bit concerned since any doctor worth their weight should know ablations and fibroids do not mix. The fibroids will increase in size and you will bleed more. Read the packaging. I suggest UFE, aka embolization since it is non invasive and will allow you to keep your organs and hormone system intact. UFE completely shrunk my fibroids to nothing but I absolutely DID not want that surgery! I say it should be avoided if at all possible.
