Sitting up after abdominal surgery
My hyst on 12/12 will be my 5th abdominal surgery. With the most recent one, the nurse gave me the best suggestion ever about sitting then standing up from a lying down position. Roll onto your side (the side facing the side of the bed), slowly swing your legs around, and ease yourself up onto your elbow first, then use your arm to push yourself up. I don't know why no one ever told me that before, but it was wonderful advice! The times before I would just try to sit straight up without rolling over.
I also got a new Kooshi pillow to take to the hospital and keep with me post op. It will be my security blanket of sorts.
I have never had staples. All of my surgeons have used the internal sutures, glue, and steri-strips. I have been eternally grateful. The doc says she will use this method for the hyst also. I'm not sure why, but I am terrified of the staples

Gas-X! One of your post-op bestest friends will be Gas-X, and it comes in strips (like the breath fresheners) as well as pill form.

Abdominal Hysterectomy
We have a lot in common Knitty. Not only the surgery date, but the fear of staples. Only mine is not just a fear because my body actually rejects metal (has pushed out any type of piercing on its own). My dr is supposed to use the same method as far as closing the incision. I'm wondering how many other women have had this type of closure and how it healed for them. I've read about hematoma's under the staples, and infections between the staples and stitches. But if these happen and the dr fastens us up with glue and steri-strips, what happens if we have something like this? Does the dr have to cut us open again to take care of the problem?
I'm sorry. I don't mean to scare anyone. But I'm starting to get a little frantic about the situation with the holidays coming. I need to sit back and take a deep breath and try to relax a little bit. "Think happy thoughts".
Hugs, Luck, and Prayers to all,
Char

Abdominal Hysterectomy
Hi, Char and all
I had a vertical incision with 25 staples.
The staples are titanium and even people who have other piercing problems do not seem to have any reaction to these. The staples didn't hurt and it didn't hurt to have them removed, either. I was very concerned about that.
My healing looks beautiful so far, three weeks post op, and honestly I felt a bit comforted that I had stitches AND the staples. In my opinion there's no downside to them.

Abdominal Hysterectomy
Hey ladies!!!!
The staples does not hurt at all, sometimes when they take them out it might pull a little. I also think the longer you wait to take them out the better anyone is. The doctor took mine out after two weeks, and my scar is looking pretty purdie.
I hope this kind of helps anyone of you out there that are recieving your first surgery. Also, good luck again on your fifth Knitty. Also, knitty my nurse in the hospital showed me the same way of getting out of bed the first time, and it work AWESOME!!!!
Best wishes,
Teresa

GFae, I just had the same surgery (on Monday 11/27) you went through. I am slowly moving around and making good progress. When did you start to feel like yourself again?

Abdominal Hysterectomy
I remember taking things VERY slowly for the first couple of weeks, then things gradually got better. I walked every day, a little bit further each time, went back to the gym after my 6-week check for light exercise, then just gradually built up. I had trouble with fatigue for quite a while, and I just napped whenever I needed to. My recovery was very easy, but I tried not to take on too much, and I think that helped.

Teresa-
Hi! Thanks for the reassurance on the staples. I don't know why they freak me out so much!
Oh, and I have a good friend who lives near you. I'm not sure what town he is in, but he is a manager at the new Cabela's in Rogers. I love Minnesota, but I'm stuck here in the desert.
