My Good Story
Jillsy's post about things turning out "ok" has inspired me to come back and tell you mine. Like so many of us, we tend to hang around here when it's bad and then disappear when we're feeling good, so you never hear the good part!!
When I had my surgery (total) in 2005 I too was TOTALLY un-prepared for what hit me. I thought I would go in have the surgery come out take a little pill every day and live happily ever after! When I was hit by the crash of anxiety, panic, pain, emotional upheaval and all around feeling that I had somehow lost my true inner self and personality, I was terrified.
This combined with a growing gall bladder problem that caused rapid weight loss (which further aggravated the hormone issue) convinced me that I was indeed done for, my life was over as I knew it. I was wishing I had just stayed sick as it was better than this!
I seem to have one of those bodies/systems that doesn't retain well, so I have to change patches every 48 hours if I use them or take 2-3 Estrace a day if I use those and the fluctuations made me insane. For the past three years I've been using the Dot 1mg every 48 hours but I'm just so tired all the time with it I recently went back to my Enjuvia which works well due to being time released. I think the magic ingrediant for me is the progesterone at night to help fill in some of those estrogen receptors and provide a calming effect. I also use Vagifem twice a day for vaginal health and testosterone twice a week.
I know that sounds like a lot of "stuff" (I used to think this when I would read the other sister's laundry list lol) but eventually you just figure out what works.
Today (just celebrated the five year mark) I feel great great great and if I could only give one piece of advice it would be to STAY CALM and realzie the fear/anxiety you are feeling is hormonal, it will pass and you are not dying!! Move forward slowing in small doses and see how it feels, things can always be changed, you're not committing to a method for life
It will get better...it seems as the years go by, your body calms down and says "oh ok, I guess we're going to be okay so I'll just take a dab of this and dab of that and be happy" ;o)
Good luck Ladies!!!!

Re: My Good Story
That's great news...thanks for sharing.
What dose and delivery of progesterone are you using? I know this will vary for everyone, but I it's still interesting to hear others stories.

Re: My Good Story
Good for you! I am also a hyster sister who has had a good experience and as a result haven't checked in very much.
I had a TAH/BSO due to cancer at age 51. I was absolutely terrified not only of the surgery and being put under but also the cancer diagnosis. And going into surgical menopause frightened me as well. It's almost two years later and the menopause part has been fine without any hormones, and my screenings have been cancer free! I do worry about two weeks before every screening but I realize that is normal. The only trouble I had was pain in my groin area after the surgery that was fairly uncomfortable. I had surgery in April 2008, and in Sept 2009 I was still having problems. I am now pain free. It really did just kind of go away.
