What do I eat the day before surgery ~ No bowel prep!

I lucked out, NO BOWEL PREP the day before surgery.

My question is: My doctor said to eat light the day before surgery, what does this mean/include and what not to include?
Something in the back of my mind says nothing red in color (like jello).

Your thoughts, P L E A S E!

Re: What do I eat the day before surgery ~ No bowel prep!

Hi Funeejello! I would say foods that are easy to digest, nothing that would be overly gassy- ya, like baked beans would be a priority . Stick with fruits, nuts, whole grain bread, cooked veggies, juices. Avoid cheeses, sticky things like peanut butter, lots of milk or red meats (again, prob wudnt be thinking steak dinner @ this point). If you are still unsure, im sure lots of the sisters will have some great suggestions or you could even call your physician's office & ask his/her nurse what they think is best.
Best wishes for an uneventful visit to the castle!

Re: What do I eat the day before surgery ~ No bowel prep!

Hmm...I also have no bowel prep, just no food/drink after midnight the night before. Not even light meals the day before. But, I figure oatmeal, sandwich and salad the day before, a little tea and water and then a sip of water with my morning meds before I head in for pre-op. Just know what is easy for you to survive on and go with that. Honestly, I am so anxious and it's still 11 days away...I am having trouble eating now, so the day before for me will probably be super light just due to nerves alone.

Re: What do I eat the day before surgery ~ No bowel prep!

I haven't been ordered a bowel prep, either, and if that doesn't change, I'll just do the eat light, easily digestible foods thing the day before. When I think of light, easily digestible foods, I think of toast made with whole wheat bread, soups, and fruits and veggies (just not the gassy ones like broccoli ). I'm sure I'll be cleaning out anyway on my own the day before from my nerves!!
It looks like tomorrow is your surgery, Amyrup! Good luck to you and to you guys that are having your surgeries later in the week and next week!! I'll pray that all goes well for you!

If you don't have to do a bowel prep, you probably do not have a restriction on the color red either. Avoiding red foods is an issue when surgery on the bowel is involved. If the bowel is nicked and one has food or liquid with red (or blue or purple dyes) that has not cleared the system, it can make it difficult to see the inside of the bowel for repair and/or could look like blood.
