Surgery tomorrow - getting a cold?

Hey everyone! Tomorrow is the day - I hope! I had to cancel two weeks ago because I got a cold. (Seldom get sick but got run down after family emergency; thanks for all your support then, too!) I was all better within the week and went to an all day meeting last Thursday where it seemed like everyone was coughing and sneezing and otherwise spewing. Today I started feeling drippy and have been sneezing and coughing - but only a little. Hyst is technically elective, so was told anesthesiologist won't take you if you have a cold. My question, if anyone has any experience: how sick do you have to be? Hopefully it will be LAVH so no big incision. No nasal congestion. Just a drippy sinus. Any experience/feedback? Thanks!! About all I can do now is show up tomorrow and see what happens....

Been through this before

Hi sister,
:email:
I'm really sorry about your cold...I've been through the same scenario last june. I was scheduled for my TAH in june but had to cancel at the last minute because I was very congested and had a fever. It's cold here in Toronto, Canada and I'm not going anywhere till my surgery Nov. 12. So far...so good.

As for your concerns, all you can do right now is REST and drink plenty of fluids. The way I look at it (just my personal opinion) just show up for the surgery and let them decide what they will do. It all depends on the Anesthesists. Sometimes, depending how bad you are, it is better to be safe and not operate. After all, they have to think of your health and what is appropriate according to the circumstances.

Don't feel guilty and you do not have to apoligize for having a cold to anyone. However, I can't see a big problem with a drippy nose, but if you're running a fever...well...that's another story.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, keep positive and if it's not ment to be tomorrow, there is always another day. (I know how it feels...the waiting is terrible). But you are not alone, we are all here to support you.

Good Luck and keep us posted

Thinking of you in prayer

Cold Remedy

Try Cold-Ez zinc lozenges (or whatever brand might be available.) They work wonders for stopping a cold in it's tracks, but only if used at the first sign of a symptom. (If the cold gets full blown, they do help shorten the duration.) You have to suck the lozenges, not chew them, for them to work properly.

Good luck and best wishes,

Lisa

Surgery tomorrow - getting a cold?

I just had surgery on Thursday, October 31, and thought I was coming down with a cold the Monday before. Turned out it was allergies, but I still had quite a bit of post-nasal drip on the day of the surgery and was concerned that it might be a problem. It wasn't.

Thanks!

I truly appreciate your replies and your support! Last night I popped a vitamin C, drank a couple of quarts of water and slept fairly well until 4am. Rested until nearly five. Ready to roar I guess??? No congestion this morning. Still a bit of a tickle; maybe I'll just blame it on moody sinuses. With everything going on in the family (mom diagnosed with terminal cancer three weeks ago, starts chemo today; final stages of construction; teenage son who needs to get moving on college apps), I've been able to not think much about the surgery, strange as that may sound. It kind of hit me in the shower this morning, but didn't want to cry and risk getting a stuffy nose. Of course, NOW I'm thinking of lists of things I should have/meant to do before today. (So much time on the phone about mom, and on the road back and forth. She's a 2+ hour drive away.) Guess I'll just start writing things down for spouse and son! Thanks to everyone's emphasis here on resting and being a princess, I'm planning to stubbornly enforce that, even though it's against my nature.

I'll probably be checking back in a few days if things go as planned. Thanks again!
